Man charged with dumping woman's body in Stony Brook swamp, but not with her murder, at least not yet

A Dorchester man already behind bars on charges he kidnapped, raped and tried to strangle a family member this year faces arraignment today on charges he dumped another woman's body in a swampy area near Turtle Pond in the Stony Brook Reservation last year, the Suffolk County District Attorney's office reports.

Rinnyers Pena, 42, is formally charged only with disinterring a body. Although Alenny Matos's body was found in a plastic trash bag in May, 2020 - several months after she was last seen getting into a car with Pena - the state medical examiner's office has yet to issue a report on the date and cause of death - the DA's office says.

Pena will be brought to West Roxbury Municipal Court for his arraignment from the Suffolk County jail, where he is being held on unrelated charges in Roxbury court of kidnapping, rape, strangulation or suffocation, assault and battery on a household or family member, photographing an unsuspecting person in the nude and distribution of a Class A substance, the DA's office says.

According to the DA's office, one of Matos's relatives called 911 on Jan. 27, 2020 to request a well-being check on her in her Dorchester home after the relative was unable to contact her over two days. Police didn't find Matos and began a missing-person's investigation.

Detectives did obtain phone records showing several calls between Pena and Matos on Jan. 25.

Evidence gathered during the course of the investigation – including cell site location information, security camera footage and interviews – suggests that Mr. Pena picked Ms. Matos’ up at her Dorchester apartment in the early morning hours of January 26, 2020, and drove her to his Norton Street residence. He later drove to the area of Turtle Pond Parkway and Enneking Parkway inside the Stony Brook Reservation. Prosecutors allege that he transported Ms. Matos’ body to that location and abandoned her there. Months later, an individual walking in the area located Ms. Matos’ remains inside a trash bag on May 9.

In a statement, DA Rachael Rollins said:

Everyone deserves to be treated with care and dignity. The evidence gathered during the course of our investigation suggests that Mr. Pena chose to treat Ms. Matos with anything but care and dignity when he disposed of her body inside a trash bag following her death. As we continue to investigate Ms. Matos’ death, we ask that anyone with information that could aid in this or other investigations share what they know with the police or prosecutors in my office. This family deserves answers. Ms. Matos deserved better.

Innocent, etc.
