McGreevey's on Boylston Street strikes out for last time; space could soon re-open with new owner

The owners of McGreevey's, 911 Boylston St., last week signed a letter of intent to sell the place after failing to obtain any money from a federal restaurant fund they had hoped to use to re-open, their attorney told the Boston Licensing Board this week.

The bar - owned by the Ciminos and leased to Dropkick Murphy's Ken Casey - shut last August due to the pandemic. Attorney Stephen Miller told the board the Ciminos wanted to reopen the place - one of several Boylston Street bars closed due to Covid-19 - and was hoping to use money from the SBA's Restaurant Revitalization Fund.

But the fund ran out of money before their application could be processed, Miller said.

Miller did not provide any details on who might soon be re-opening in the space.

The hearing was the board's first since the pandemic hit on establishments not using their liquor licenses. Board Executive Secretary Leslie Delaney Hawkins said the board will likely be bringing additional closed establishments with liquor licenses in for hearings now that the state of emergency is over. License holders are supposed to either actually use their licenses, sell them or return them to the city, given that there is only a set number of liquor licenses the state lets Boston issue.

The Back Bay was losing its spot as the place to go and be seen long before the pandemic threw yet another monkey wrench into the problem. High rents, aging residents, kids that don't drink as much any more, Red Sox fandom over-exposure together with the ascendancy of the Seaport/Fort Point means that those old haunts can't compete any more and wouldn't be able to even if the pandemic ended and the SBA cut them a check on the same day.

McGreevey’s was a good option for locals and college students for trivia night — good mix of ages, fun and friendly crowd. Maybe that sucks to you, who cares, DotRat.
