State now urging everybody to wear a mask in public indoor spaces

The Massachusetts Department of Public Health is saying this morning that everybody should wear a mask in public indoor spaces even if they're fully vaccinated, due to omicron.

Some cities and towns, such as Boston, do actually require masks in public indoor spaces.

The state adds that masks are mandatory on public transit and in health-care facilities.

Like Palpatine's perpetual "emergency". I didn't much like it after 9/11 and don't much like it now. But, you/we/they say it's necessary, so you know, hopefully it helps more than it hurts.

How is the investigation into the origin if Covid-19 going? What's the plan for keeping this type of thing ever occurring again? After all it's not 1400 or 1918 c.e. Are we putting adequate government resources toward establishing with scientific certainty how this happened and how to prevent its future occurrence? Where are Musk and Bezos on funding this sort of thing?

You forgot Soros and the Illuminati.

And are into futuristic scientific stuff. I don't think they caused this. Now Cheney and 9/11, that's a different story....

Go read up on the history of plagues, epidemics, pandemics, etc.

Your conspiracy theorizing is matched only by your ignorance of biology and your technological hubris in thinking that we will ever be able to keep this from ever happening again.

We have come a long way with vaccines and sanitation as it is ... but airborne pathogens and profligate mutations and massive-scale global supply chains are a whole different ball game.

That shrieking “authoritarianism!” persuades no one and achieves nothing.

No need to alert the authorities!

does "Hey, we suggest you do this" fall under authoritarianism?

if you believe that Fauci is literally Joseph Goebbels and that mask mandates are tantamount to forced sterilization then i can see how a suggestion might be read as a decree.

these are real sentiments that i’ve discussed with people that i know in real life

It's a big world out there and we have no control over what happens outside our borders.

Somebody named Dan has no freaking clue about the history of epidemics ... or two centuries of pandemic law and "rights" ... or technology and hubris for that matter.

Just wear a mask, okay?

Just like you wear a shirt, and shoes, and pants ...

I'd love to see you try to stand all day at work in pantyhose and minimum 2" heels like women employees of the state (and most private companies) used to have to or be fired. Sheesh.

Or just move to Texas.

Whether this came from bats via pangolins or some other wild animal, to a wet market, or via careless people in a lab, or even a nefarious foreign plot, the virus is here now. Wearing a mask makes sense based on what we do know about the virus--it's dangerous and airborne. Get masks printed with American flags or "protecting myself from a Chinese plot" if you like, the important thing is that you wear one and it fits properly.

Then, since you agree with me that preventing future pandemics is important, write to Congress and the White House and push them to restore the funding for things like pandemic monitoring that was cut before 2019.

The verbs in this advisory are "urges" and "advises". We're hardly looking at a totalitarian state stomping its boot-heels on an (unmasked) face, forever. The only actual requirements are for healthcare, transportation, and certain other high-density and/or high-risk settings. Hardly a major imposition.

As for origin of SARS-CoV-2, that's ongoing work. It's a long and difficult process because you have to stumble on just the right samples in order to fill in the missing links. China isn't releasing Wuhan lab documents for inspection but honestly I can only blame them so much, given that people were such assholes about it and instantly politicized every damn aspect of the pandemic, but I bet they're doing their own investigation as well. And there have been a lot of calls for banning gain-of-function research, which is something that people were advocating for doing even *before* COVID-19 was a thing.

Every end-of-the-world plague novel that I ever read either comes from a government accident, or because something is unleashed on mankind that was previously hidden deep in a jungle or buried under Arctic permafrost. As we lose more jungle and more of the Arctic ice, well, we're just getting started.

Our reaction to 9/11 brought us a pretty significant assault on liberty. PATRIOT act, warrantless wiretaps approved by secret courts, "Sneak and peek" searches executed against your ISP or telcom provider or landlord, who was forbidden from telling you that your stuff had been searched. Not to mention America's war entered into under false pretenses.

Our reaction to COVID-19? Vaccine and mask mandates, and restrictions on large indoor gatherings.

I just don't see the comparable intrusion at all.

Can we take a mask off when speaking on a podium?

are you speaking from a podium?

You put your underwear over your head AND post a link on youtube.

At an event I attended virtually this weekend, speakers were tested that day and were more than 6 feet away from all audience members when they talked unmasked on a podium. Especially for something like a press conference, this can be helpful for audience members who need to lip read. An even better solution would be to have the speakers wear the masks that have a transparent section so people can see the mouth while still being protected.

Most of us never stopped. This is just common sense given the unpredictability of COVID.

Like many people, I spent the summer not much worrying about wearing one since I got my cootie shots.

As soon as Delta came on line, I put mine back on well before any requests or mandates because it really isn't a big deal.

As did 99% of the people that I saw in grocery stores and other public places, because it really isn't a big deal.

We have a sufficiently educated populace that understands that even people with their shots can easily reduce their risks by masking up again, because it really isn't a big deal. I'm surprised there even has to be any urging or requirements anymore. The FreeDumb crew can go right ahead and risk self-removal from the gene pool.

I wear it, and I understand why I have to wear it, but saying "it isn't a big deal" isn't exactly true, unless I'm the only one having more pimples than I have since I was 17 and also not being able to hear half of what anyone says

...those things are what you consider "a big deal"?

I do in fact miss being able to talk to people and understand what they were saying

I'm not saying that to be flip - I'm saying it because you may be attributing an existing or emerging issue to the masks.

I'm at an age where it isn't unusual for people to start losing hearing acuity. Here's a couple of anecdata points:

A friend in her mid-50s was complaining about "I can't hear anyone with a mask", too. But the problem wasn't other people wearing masks - she had measurable hearing loss.

My uncle said the same thing - masks! My cousin said that he was having trouble before, he just didn't want to deal with it. For some reason he listened to me and not her and ... guess what?

I did kick in for the hearing aids.

(and, yes, I "hear" you on the pimples ... that's why I prefer cloth masks washed in things that don't bother my skin.)

Not consciously, but unconsciously. Masks interfere with that.

I am standing at a grocery store right now south of Boston. In my line of sight, I am seeing 1/18 people wearing a mask.

We’re not going to individual responsibility ourselves out of this if only pockets of people are 99% mask complaint.

*edit* I should add that I walked in with a mom and her ~8 y/o daughter, who were maskless, and the first thing the daughter does—who is obviously old enough to know better—was to pick up a mango, put it in he mouth as if to eat it like an apple, and put it back down, then pick up another one and ask “mom, what’s this?” I’m at a loss for UHub-friendly words.

I mean, if we are talking the overall rise of Delta, that would be April, at the point where the WHO decided that rather than naming variants after where they started, they would use Greek letters (except Xi, because we all know who really runs the WHO.) But it was at the time of the Provincetown outbreak that we all knew that things weren't as safe as we had hoped.

Does this mean that I've been staying more cautious than you have?

up
Voting closed 0

apparently (s)he has enough sway with the WHO to have their name skipped as well

I was not looking forward to the endless Abbot & Costello routines about the "Nu variant". This, but every damn day: https://twitter.com/greedisgood70/status/1463979776251764741

Xi was skipped simply because it's a common name, although yes, they'd probably skip "Trump" if that were a Greek letter too. Anything fraught, confusing, or likely to stigmatize.

Is the Greek letter "Xi" even pronounced the same way as the Chinese surname name "Xi"?

Serious question. I think the answer is no.

But do we pronounce them the same way Mandarin Chinese speakers do either? Or how an Ethiopian scientist would?

I wonder what they would do in a strongly science-based society...
