Acting DA wants to remove 'acting' from his title

WBZ reports that Kevin Hayden, appointed by Gov. Baker to fill out Rachael Rollins's term as Suffolk County DA, will run for the post this fall.

District 5 (Hyde Park, Mattapan, Roslindale) City Councilor Ricardo Arroyo, a former public defender, has already announced he's running for the position, which oversees prosecutors for Boston, Winthrop, Chelsea and Revere.

It's a stupid colonial relic that is frequently weaponized against women to imply that their promotions/appointments are illegitimate.

Would like to have seen him take action on the violent crime rate before declaring for election.

DA's don't control the violent crime rate. Harsh sentences don't do it either. It's hard to know what causes violent crime, but it is correlated with the unemployment rate, mental health rates, high school dropout rates (or levels of education), access to food and housing and a person's overall worth/dignity in society. Address some of those issues and the violent crime rate falls.

While Suffolk County is more than just the City of Boston, violent crime in Boston was down last year while his predecessor was in office, and he took over the job about a month ago.

What kind of action are you expecting to have seen from him in 5 or so weeks? Didn't jury trials just resume in the Commonwealth this week after being put on hold in late December?

If you'd like to see him charge a violent crime suspect and see it through to conviction at a jury trial before he declares his candidacy for an election being held in 8 months, I don't think you know what kind of timeline the legal system operates on. Especially with the backlog of cases from court interruptions over the past 23 months, though I suppose with violent crime being down, the caseload may also be down, but then we have to go back to the top where violent crime is already on the decline here...

Rachel Rollins won a pretty big victory for DA and Kevin Hayden isn't anything like her. Arroyo is much more aligned with Rollins and is the clear progressive. Sorry, not sorry Hayden.

Certain people in Arroyo's district (which I live in) must be lining up to take his spot.

Hayden is deeply entrenched in the black community in Suffolk County. And he’s an experienced and well respected litigator.

Arroyo spent four years at CPCS. I’m not even sure he made it to Superior Court. We don’t elect junior attorneys to run the DAs office.

Maybe it will be closer than "doesn't have a chance," but one candidate is promising to continue Rollins' legacy and the other isn't. I guess we will see in September.

Is the current official title 'Acting' or 'Interim' or just regular DA? 'Acting DA' would be confusing because the title 'ADA' is already taken.
