Brandon Bowser was walking down Brighton Avenue yesterday, looked up and went "RIP the Sunset Grill mural."
Sunset Grill closed in 2017, but its mural hung around a few more years. Compare to a similarly large mural painted over on Newbury Street.
For a city that prides itself on our deep history we sure let a lot of it just disappear.
We'll even happily speed up the process if developers are involved.
With exception, much of the city (and Cambridge) feels almost uncomfortably sterile now.
The existing mural was tagged with graffiti. The red paint over is welcome.
Quite certain the cultural demise started with the end of rent control but hard to overlook how much responsibility is shared with the retailers who cater to the "experience seeker" over the needs of the metro area's residents.
That and cornhole.
If so, then this is a real waste of someone's money to paint it over. If it was starting to look bad, then maybe this is for the best.
The owner/developer wanted it gone before some group got it protected and prevented them from doing something to the building which would change it.
Joke might be on them as that red wall is begging to be tagged.
The mural was tagged to all get-out, which might explain the red paint. Murals used to mean something in our neighborhood, but they’ve become fair game in the last couple years. Lame.
Thanks for the update. It's been a while since I was up that way.
I noticed that the store at the corner of Washington and Archdale in Roslindale, which had a famous mural, is turning into a pot shop and the mural is gone.
Since the pot shop will be replacing a bodega and the mural showed a giant bodega cat (which, granted, was also a reference to the Cat Crossing sign a bit further down the street).
I could imagine the current owners thinking it'd be a better spot to advertise their own business than a business that's been defunct for years.
