Mario's Pizzeria in Roxbury closes

Mario Bailote, who opened Mario's Pizzeria at 197 Humboldt Ave. in 2018, with a menu that included both pizza and Portuguese food, announced today it's closed - and that a new pizza place will soon open there:

This has been a tough decision to make given the amazing support from the community over the past 3.5 years.

We are so very grateful and will miss all our loyal customers.

We are selling to another local pizza shop operator so there is more to come from 197 Humboldt. We hope you can show them the love you have given us. Owning a small business is never easy and it’s the customers who make the work worth it.

I can only assume our friend is expressing that the Mario's tuna sub is on par with that served at Ideal Sub Shop on Dudley Street.

I can further extrapolate that this person judges said tuna by its merits, and is not part of the faction that insists that either Portuguese or Cabo Verdean tuna is the only tuna worth eating and won't touch the other.

This is a sad day for this neighborhood. Mario's not just had the best pizza àround it also had the best owner around. I would like to wish Mario and his family the best. Much love.

Will be missed, sent a lot of folk there for lunch. Chicken parm's were always clutch

This is a tragedy. Great food, great atmosphere and Mario was a friendly hard working family man who after years of hard work opened his own pizzaria and was doing great until the lock down which unfortunately was the beginning of the end for many small businesses. I wish Mario and his family the best. Much love call me if you need anything
