You can laugh or you can cry about Green Line Extension service this afternoon.

At 1:51 p.m. Jill Rodgers sent a Green Line cri de couer from a trolley sitting motionless on the viaduct between Lechmere and Union Square, you know, the part of the Green Line that was shut down for a month to make it work all nice and smooth and stuff.

The Green Line’s newest stop continues to be a vicious schedule bungler. We are, AGAIN, stopped on the tracks between Lechmere and Union Square, 17 minutes and counting. Infuriating.

At 2:05 p.m. Eric went to the Twitter airwaves to wonder why he didn't just walk to Union Square instead of trusting his journey to Charlie:

Can y’all fix the green line pls we’ve been stuck for like 45 minutes trying to get to Union Sq. I could’ve walked like bffr

At 2:08 p.m., Andi Goodman, apparently on the same dead train as Rodgers, screamed, in an online sort of way:

Less than a minute later, the T itself claimed service across the Charles was resuming, without saying what the problem was.

Not long after that, though, Rodgers reported:

We puttered forward a bit and are stopped again.

Why does anyone take the Green Line to Union Square?

Even when it's running perfectly, the Green Line from Park Street to Union is scheduled for 18 minutes. Which is pathetic.

Add in the wait for a trolley that actually goes all the way to Union, and it's usually faster to take the Red Line to Central (9 minutes) and walk the 0.9 miles to Union.

How many billions was this again?

It was $2 billion, and surely you realize that the much longer and not-yet-open Medford branch accounts for most of that.

But apparently the reason people don't use the T is because it is too expensive.

Add in the wait for a trolley that actually goes all the way to Union, and it's usually faster to take the Red Line to Central (9 minutes) and walk the 0.9 miles to Union.

So you can take the subway for 9 minutes and walk a mile (6 min?) or you can stay in one seat and not walk at all for an extra 3 minute delay. For a whole lot of people, the extra 3 minutes of sitting is worth it.

The question isn't "Why is there a train to Union" the question is why did it costs billions and take 20 years.

More than 100 years ago there was trolleys all over the place, including Union Sq. They didn't cost inflation adjusted billions to build. They were fast and heavily used.
