Eitan Normand shows us all the traffic cones now sitting on the Charles River below the Mass. Ave. Bridge. The state had put the cones down as part of a pilot to add bike lanes to the bridge.
MassDOT Administrator Jonathan Gulliver is pissed.
He reports that whoever threw cones over the side of the bridge came back after workers put down new ones and threw those on the ice as well:
This creates a hazard for all road users and is polluting the Charles. Anyone with information on this should contact law enforcement.

$10 says it was dumb kids. But why consider that when we can assume it’s a hate crime against bicyclists? Give me a break.

Remember when vandalism meant flipping a freshman end over end across a bridge to create an alternative scale of measurement? Who's gonna fish those cones out of the drink when the ice melts (don't nobody go out onto it for crissakes).

I mean yea, dumb kid (or drunk 20 something) is a likely answer, but its still illigal dumping and could result in $15000 fine for each cone after the first.
Which would be clearly be overkill, but it makes the point.

Because I would hope that some would give me straight odds on a $25 dollar bet of the same thing. Though I would want a broad definition of "kids."
Doesn't make the act right, and certainly that someone from the highway department is going to have to go on the ice to get the cones back ranges somewhere between annoying and dangerous, but I don't see a motorist going through the effort to do this. Most likely someone walking over the bridge, perhaps under the influence of something or whose mind is otherwise impaired, deciding to have some "fun" by throwing cones off the bridge.

I’m not justifying it, I don’t want cones in the water either, but let’s spare everyone the pitchfork outrage and “cars are bad” debate, please.

I'd buy dumb kids or drunks, but the crybabying over this pilot is bonkers enough that I'd believe some Herald commenter went out in the cold to act like this.
And said crybabying is baffling. The bridge feeds into a bunch of stoplights on both sides (due to busy colleges/neighborhoods on both) and goes past multiple public transit stops. There's basically no reason to take a car across it unless you've got a medical concern or are hauling freight.
