Boston is hot; city declares heat emergency

Mayor Wu this morning declared a heat emergency for today and tomorrow, with temperatures reaching into the 90s and the heat index - the heat plus the impact of humidity - expected to go even higher.

The declaration means all Boston community centers will open cooling centers for residents between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. BPL branches all have AC as well. Some 64 splash pads at Boston parks will be spritzing at full volume. Also:

Most BPS schools have access to air conditioning. The City will supply water and fans to those schools who may need it. Additionally, BPS is following the MIAA guidelines for weather and will be checking in with coaches and BPS athletics regularly to ensure that students are safe and supported.

And:

If you see individuals out in the heat who appear immobile or disoriented, please ask them if they need assistance and call 911 immediately.

The city shelters at 112 Southampton St. (for men) and 794 Massachusetts Ave. (for women) are open 24 hours with air conditioning; the city has waived entry restrictions for people who had previously been banned for non-violent offenses.

Admittedly the dew points and the amount of showery rain has been high this summer

However -- Officially -- Boston has failed even to have one "Heat wave" this summer and the total number of 90 degree days has been minimal by comparison to the past 25 year average

*as measured at the airport. Heat islands are real.

I'm sure all your friends down at the (air conditioned) recreation center are impressed by your simplistic "insights", but do be quiet while grownups are busy doing the actual heat exposure assessments on a very local level, tallying up impacts on emergency services and counting up the emergency room visits, hospitalizations, and bodies.

Temperatures are measured way out in the harbor at the airport - and nobody lives at the airport.

It's the humidity. I was wondering why I had trouble sleeping these last couple of mornings.
