Cambridge bookstore employee uses bear hug to subdue shoplifter who'd just threatened to shoot the place up, police say

Cambridge Police report arresting a local man on unarmed robbery charges at a Harvard Square bookstore yesterday - after first getting him up from the floor where employees were keeping him pinned.

Police say Richard Wheeler, 63, who lists an Albany Street homeless shelter as his address, tried to lift some items from the Massachusetts Avenue store shortly before 6 p.m.

Wheeler reached into his back waistband of his pants and stated "Y'all wanna get shot?'" ... An employee who feared that he or customers would be shot by Wheeler, then grabbed Wheeler in a bear hug and placed him on the ground until police arrived to control the scene.

Police did not identify the specific bookstore. The charge indicates that Wheeler did not actually have a gun.

Wheeler is, as they say, known to police.

Innocent, etc.

The Coop has a Mass Ave address, and I think they still sell books on an upper floor behind the lanyards and sweatshirts

And they’re half as big as they used to be, they closed most of their Palmer Street building.

Not to diminish the ongoing investigation into the Sayed Faisal shooting, but kudos to the bookstore staff and CPD for bravery and restraint, we all know how this might have played out elsewhere in the country, happens everyday.

As usual, the hero was just a regular person. That doesn't stop people from handing police lots of unearned glory though.

Proving once again that the only way to stop a bad guy without a gun is with a good guy without a gun.
