Dorchester man dies in wrong-way crash in DC, police say

The Metropolitan PC Department in Washington reports Mohammed Islam, 21, of Dorchester died after he crossed the center lines on a DC street, hit two other cars on the other side, one head on, then was hit by an SUV coming the other way.

Islam was driving a Tesla Model 3 with four passengers when he crossed onto the other side of Connecticut Avenue NW around 7:50 a.m. on Feb. 21.

The Tesla crossed the solid-double yellow lines into the northbound lane of travel, struck a 2018 Toyota C-HR, and then struck a 2010 Mercedes-Benz ML-350, head-on. A 2017 Chevrolet Equinox, that was also traveling northbound, then struck the passenger side of the Tesla.

DC Fire and Emergency Medical Services responded to the scene and transported the occupants of the Tesla, the driver of the Toyota, and the driver of the Mercedes to area hospitals for treatment of injuries.

Islam died Sunday, five days after the crash, police say.

With the amount I see other drivers briefly drifting over the center line I'm surprised this sort of thing doesn't happen more often on the j-way.

It's a treacherous parkway.

Horrible. Any information on whether it was in self drive mode?

The area where it happened is near the National Zoo & that stretch of Connecticut Ave is full of commuter traffic from Cleveland Park & Maryland that time of day. It would be like driving on Comm Ave in Allston or Mass Ave north of Harvard Square at 7:50 AM. No one is speeding, even if they want to. It seems like a mechanical/programmimg error is more likely than a human one. I hope they look into that.

Connecticut Ave used to have an unusual arrangement where the lanes reversed at rush hour. Like the Expressway zipper lane, but without any barrier or even electronic signage. https://goo.gl/maps/bssTgzxSy8cYG5VK9

However, from recent views, it looks like they no longer do that.

I'm glad my son was on a lower speed two-lane roadway when some dipshit in a rental car looking for her phone crossed the center line and would have gone head on if he hadn't taken evasive action into the empty parking lane.

As it was the sideswipe broke the rear axle and totaled his car. Thankfully no injuries to either party. The woman was driving a rental because (take a wild guess).

When is society going to catch up to the fact that inattentive driving should be treated like drunk driving and trigger hefty fines and retraining activities?
