The Crimson reports Harvard will rename its medical school for the first person to give it $1 billion - although the money would have to come with no restrictions.
In contrast, Harvard renamed its public-health school after somebody for just $400 million.

Those GOP politicians love to exploit the educational benefits and connections of an elite East Coast education, and then repudiate it when they want to appeal to the mouth-breathing MAGA crowd.
Given what a whoring huckster and dangerous quack Oz has become, I would hope Harvard would spurn his money even if he offered it. Like Dr. "I Like to Pretend I Invented Email" and Governor Florida Man, he's now a shameful association for his alma maters.

When I worked at HMS I worked

When I worked at HMS I worked in Building D. It was purchased for an unknown (to us scientists) amount by some Italian guy whose family member who had been treated nearby at an HMS affiliated hospital. It is now the Armenise building. I can tell you that other than the name change on the building, no monies flowed into any of the laboratories for research purposes. Just went into their big old endowment fund,

$51 billion. Having worked finance at one of the HMS hospitals, they don't spend the endowment. Just the interest. Every year we'd get interest from endowments designated for us transferred into the corresponding specific accounts for us to spend according to the terms of the endowment.

It's nice to see that there are still some things which are almost certainly sacred.

I believe that was just the name of the main building once occupied by that school -- which was called the Graduate School of Public Administration before it was renamed in 1966. That building is apparently now used by the Department of Economics.

It seems unfair to give this privilege to someone just because they donate "first." There must be better criteria when it comes to this incredible honor -- there are certainly perfectly suitable multi-billionaires who may not be as quick to the draw but who may be better equestrians, possess the most tasteful super yacht, or have the lowest income tax.

If Harvard cared about people's health, they'd name the school for the first person to give $1 billion to an actual charitable organization that provides free health care to anyone who needs it.

Blavatnik Institute at Harvard Medical School
By Daan

From the article:
The institute even has its own dean.
What were these departments prior to the $200 donation? Just little insignificant groups of people who were not really doing anything until they became part of an instititute?
I like what the Baltimore Museum of Art did when they convinced John Waters to donate art. Actually what Water's requested: name the bathrooms after him. While Waters himself had no concern for Gay rights when Baltimore was still run by the closet case Gay hating Don Schaefer, at least he figured out to immortalize himself beyond silly movies.
Harvard (and the zillion "non-profits" in Boston) could use the example. After all, institutions such as the MFA sell the naming rights of elevators (does each rise of the elevator lift the named individual closer to Heaven?). So why not name the bathrooms?
Even then why stop. Name the toilets! Although perhaps those names could be given freely. the "Donald Trump not Gold Plated Toilet." Giving to Don everyday what he gave to America.

During the Bush Junior administration, there was a ballot question in San Francisco that would have renamed the city sewage plant after him. The people who ran said plant protested on the grounds that their plant was modern, efficient, and good at what it did.

It was finished in 2003.

My esteemed alma mater has taken money grubbing to new heights. How long will it be before it changes its name to Elon Musk University?
Harvard already has more money than it knows what to do with. It needs to remember that its mission is education not empire building.
I also get the impression they think they're Asimov's First Foundation, and they imagine they'll fare better than the Library of Alexandria when civilization crashes and burns around them.
They're not, and they won't. They need to return to the path that President Eliot put them on 150 years ago.
