Newly closed Allston liquor store could be torn down for a life-sciences building

California life-sciences developer IQHQ says it will soon file plans with the BPDA to replace Marty's Liquors, which closed recently at 103 North Beacon St. in Allston - just down the street from where it hopes to build a three-building life-sciences complex.

In a "letter of intent" filed with the BPDA yesterday, IQHQ says its proposed 150,000-square-foot building on the 1.5-acre Marty's site will include ground-floor retail space and will sit atop a two-level underground parking garage.

The company says its new building "will bring new vibrancy and activity" to the Marty's site, which it called "underutilized." The building will include terraces on the upper floors, giving lab workers more access to "the outdoors and fresh air."

IQHQ has also filed plans for a much larger, three-building life-sciences complex at 155 North Beacon St.

Not Allston, that's Brighton.

That address is technically Allston

It's technically in Allston, if you aren't from Brighton. Irregardless of what any various government agencies say where this adress is, if you are from and or have lived or frequented this area, than you would have regarded this adress as Brighton. TLDR it's up to the people who use/experience/exist? That area to demarcate it, not others.

The city finally solves the little nip problem and now the street is going to instead be littered with test tubes from researcher slobs.

That's the Marty's that had that car car crash a few years ago. https://www.universalhub.com/2019/woman-injured-when-car-drives-allston-...

just what the community needs, more life science space. Not music, not arts, not restaurants.. life science.

But in news i actually care about, where is Martys going? I remember they relocated here after being up on Comm and Harvard for many years.

Would you prefer death science space?

That does exist. [trigger warning if death/bodies bother you]

They carried Mad Dog 20/20, which now seems to be unobtainable in the new money-scumified Allston.

I wonder if the closing of sound museum had an impact

As long as we're talking about liquor stores on North Beacon, does anyone remember a scary liquor store closer to Market Street, where the WGBH building is now? It was there in the late 80's. They had cases of odd, off-brand stuff and bottles that had clearly been in a store that caught fire. Always a very weird vibe, but great prices!

I recall about 25 years ago or so Dorr's in Brighton Center always had deals on off-season beers- recall you could get a relative steal if you wanted to drink various Oktoberfest beers in January- store always seemed to be staffed by BC football players at 1 point

it was located next to dunks on north beacon street. it later became an West Coast Video rental store and then a papa gino’s. it’s currently empty. the liquor store moved in the early 90s across the street to a much bigger warehouse space on the end of the sound museum building. a little guy named barry ran the place with his father. barry took zero bullshit. if he saw you shoplifting he was right behind you with his pistol in his hand. when he caught you (and he would chase you all night) the gun usually helped him get his stolen booze back. he was kinda crazy but nobody messed with him or the old man.

God forbid that the city initiate with a developer that some housing be built there.

Did Marty's have to close because all their customers were kicked out of the sound museum?

Suuuper bummed about this news.

Does anyone happen to know if the Blanchard's at the corner of Brighton and Harvard might have changed ownership in recent years? I stopped going there after that video of the owner stomping on his son's dog cage - with the dog inside - surfaced (unfortunately none of the links in the post work anymore). If it's the same guy (John Corey perhaps? Mentioned in this post) I'm certainly not about to start back up.
