Cost of re-doing Morrissey Boulevard could hit $350 million, and that doesn't include fixing the venerable Beades Bridge

The Dorchester Reporter reports the latest proposal to upgrade the easily flooded road, which would include a new street and intersection just north of the building where the Globe used to be to connect new residential complexes there to the Dorchester waterfront, but not any work on the cranky drawbridge - or other plans for flood-control barriers along Dorchester Bay.

How much could some dirt cost?

The flooded area, which is really between the SHYC and the road into UMass isn't that big and it is not like the water comes up that high.

Also - you can ride your bike on the sidewalk here. We did it all the time as kids. It's ok. Nobody is looking and no one, save for the occasional pedestrian walks along the boulevard.

Millions of dollars are saved.

Win win.

Can’t speak to the cost, but the reason barely anyone bikes there is that it’s super dangerous, there’s little sidewalk to bike on, and cars go Interstate speeds. Lots more cyclists would use Morrissey to get to/from Quincy if it were safe. There’s also a bike/pedestrian connection through Port Norfolk under construction.

There isn't even consensus on the approach for that. A berm and some riprap would at least make that critical road reliably passable, and the cost would be rational. Do that, and continue the Commission ad infinitum, like Jarndyce v. Jarndyce.

To leave things as is costs 0. The bulk of the cost will be going towards the bike lanes. Because we need more bike lanes and less car lanes. Both cannot exist. Mayor Wu says Bike are better.

Do nothing, turn most of it into a bikeway, build nature-based solutions to the rising seas while we still can.

Of course a driver, who is a huge cause of the sea level rise, would be ok with annoying and endangering pedestrians.

Seriously, you don't know the area.

If I could bike on it as a 12 year old, bike on it a lot, and you need your safe zone, perhaps you are a bigger Little Lord Fauntleroy than you already appear to be.

Although it should be safe for children to bike there, biking on sidewalks is not safe at the speeds that adults travel - particularly given the condition of those sidewalks.

I do know the area. I have biked through there. You should try biking as an adult sometime.

Given that sea level rise is likely to accelerate by 2070, building lots of car lanes here is the real waste of money.

I live on Columbia point, walk that area regularly-most recently two days ago (when the weather is nice I like walking along there to go to CVS on Morrissey.) There are times when I feel unsafe walking on the sidewalk because people drive so fast and dart around other cars.

Make DYC pay for the bridge if they want it to stay there. I cant believe the taxpayer would be expected to cover the cost of this bridge and its continued operation that is only used by a handful of boat owners. It is mind numbing to me that so much thought is going into this when DYC should just be required to move out of the bay and could even get a better location along savin hill cove next to SHYC that would give them quicker access to the harbor.

In an earlier planning document I saw it mentioned that when they originally built Morrissey Blvd the state had to accommodate the Dorchester Yacht Club because it predated the roadway giving them rights to access the harbor. There were written guarantees by the state before it was built that DYC would have that perpetual access. That's not even getting into federal law that governs waterways and access which must be met for the location.

So there's effectively no way that DYC is going to have to pay for the bridge because they are holding a winning hand on multiple fronts.

The state could try to buy them out but would probably have to provide a relatively nearby relocation. The alternative is that the state tries to force them out against that agreement and those laws where the whole thing drags out in court for ages until Morrissey Blvd eventually sinks and is unusable except at low tide like our own local version of Mont-Saint-Michel.

Another set of Morrisey Boulevard plans that do nothing to ameliorate one of the most dangerous spots in the entire Commonwealth, that rotary & the connection to I-93. (Oh, sure, that’s a different project. Aha.)

This cars-at-all-costs mentality is killing us. Where’s the urgency?!
