Moon and Venus seen through an illuminated star above Downtown Crossing

Matt Frank looked up while walking around downtown Boston tonight, and framed the moon and what might be Jupiter in the middle of a Downtown Crossing illuminated star design (Jupiter is a little hard to see, but is to the right of the moon and down a bit).

That's Jupiter by the moon right now. Venus is trailing the sun and can be seen for an hour or so after sunset.

Thank you! Normally I am able to figure it out but I was in Boston and thought it was going to be cloudy so didn't look who would be where haha. Mars is easy and there was a weird haze so I wasn't sure how bright Venus would be. I wish i knew the weather was going to be good for this, I would have brought my real camera and gotten definition.

There are quite a few good mobile apps that you just hold your phone up and they identify everything in the sky. Night Sky and Sky Guide are just 2 good ones and they are free.

Original post adjusted.

On December 7th, Jupiter reached "opposition" meaning it was at its brightest for the year and is now slowly diminishing.

Basically opposition is a "full moon" for Jupiter, because it's aligned on the opposite side of the Earth and nearly fully illuminated by the sun from our perspective.

More fun facts, opposition happens on a 13 month cycle, not 12 because Earth needs to spend a little part of every cycle catching up with how much Jupiter has moved in the last year over it's own 12 year orbit. So because of the timing last year, Jupiter won't actually have an opposition this calendar year and the next one will be January 10, 2026.

Pretty picture too.
