Free, for a limited time only: Beetle farms

While Worcester desperately tries to eradicate one beetle species, a group in eastern Massachusetts is looking for volunteers to help raise another species.

The Neponset River Watershed Association is looking for volunteers to help nurture Galerucella beetles, which eat purple loosestrife, to help control the pretty-yet-destructive invasive weed now choking off marshes across the state:

... Volunteers will care for the Purple loosestrife plants at home. Each volunteer will care for a multiple of 10 to 12 plants; this number of potted plants fits into one kiddie pool, which is used to keep the soil moist. Volunteers decide how many kiddie pools they prefer to manage. At first, plant care will consist of placing the kiddie pool in a sunny spot and keeping the water at a regular level inside the pool. After about a month, when the plants have grown to about a foot and a half in height, volunteers will cover them with nets. At this point, we'll provide volunteers with 10 beetles to apply to each of their plants. For about a month more, volunteers will continue to maintain the water levels in the kiddie pool and keep an eye on their beetles and their offspring. ...

In July, you'll bring your pots out to a designated spot along the river, release the netting and let those beetles and their larvae move out and eat wild loosestrife.

Off-duty fire dispatcher helps capture Orange Line beating suspect

Christopher Blackwell, 22, of Charlestown, will be arraigned this morning on charges that he tried to steal some guy's iPod when their Orange Line train pulled into New England Medical Center around 11 a.m. on Wednesday and that when the guy refused to give it up, Blackwell punched him in the mouth, according to the Suffolk County District Attorney's office.

According to a police report (PDF copy), an off-duty Boston fire dispatcher noticed the fray and ran after Blackwell, tackling him at the base of the up escalator, which then carried the two men to the top, where the firefighter kept Blackwell on the ground until a Transit Police officer could arrive to arrest him.

Innocent, etc.

After Guantanamo, will Obama do something about the four men framed by the Boston FBI?

J.M. Lawrence reminds us the Justice Department continues to fight a settlement for the four men sent away for a 1965 gangland murder in Chelsea that they didn't commit:

... Boston Justice has learned that Justice Department attorney Joshua Paul Waldman has asked the court to put off argument until mid-May. Waldman's wife is having their baby in February and he is scheduled for paternity leave. He says there's no need to rush the case and contends he's the only one who can argue it, not the other three government lawyers on the appeal.

"Plaintiffs also point to their ages and, in some instances, their ill health as a basis for expedition. But there is no emergency or impending deadline in this case that might warrant expedition," Waldman, 39, told the court in a December letter. If the plaintiffs win, they can seek interest, he noted. ...

TJX to hold one-day sale

TJ Maxx and Marshalls are holding a 15%-off sale on Thursday to show appreciation to consumers for "their loyalty" after thieves managed to make off with 100 million or so credit-card numbers from TJX a couple years back, not to show appreciation for the fact executives were not charged with anything. This measure of deep gratitude was announced less than a day before the sale is due to start.

Evening fun on the Red Line

Dan Dunn tweets it took him 50 minutes to get from Kendall to Alewife early this evening:

How I loathe the MBTA. And the "alert" system.

Fire notes: Peterborough Street and Ladder 26

Fire officials say the Peterborough Street fire was probably caused by a short circuit in the ceiling of Thornton's and that the fatal crash of Ladder 26 was probably caused by brake failure.

We could have a new candidate for mayor tomorrow

City Hall nemesis Kevin McCrea will announce tomorrow if he's running for mayor, David Bernstein reports.

McCrea's blog will give you a pretty good idea why City Hall types, from the council to the mayor, consider him a PITA. He keeps suing the city council over open-meeting issues - and keeps winning - and he claims Menino recently called up the editors at the South End News, for which he writes a column, to complain about him.

McCrea's platform.
