The day the world didn't end

Today's the anniversary of the day in 1844 when thousands of Massachusetts residents, many of whom had sold all their belongings, gathered for the end of the world:

As the date approached, a great comet blazed across the Massachusetts sky, and the number of believers grew. On October 22nd, the Millerites donned white robes and climbed mountains or trees to speed their ascension into heaven. When the prophecy failed, most abandoned Miller's apocalyptical teachings and returned to their original churches.

Phew: Boston to let Harvard students have more fun, beer before The Game

The Crimson reports Boston Police are relaxing tough anti-boozing policies to let Harvard "houses" serve free wine and beer to over-21 students at pre-Game tailgate parties before the annual football match against the men of Yale.

The tougher restrictions were enacted after hordes of drunken Game attendees needed to be carted away to local hospitals and lockups for excessive drunkenness in 2004.

Alas for alcohol-seeking Crimsons, the city is keeping its ban on kegs (also, rental trucks):

... It forces us to be more creative in terms of what we have to do to have a fun tailgate," said Jeffrey C. Holder '09, Dunster HoCo co-chair. "We can't just throw a keg out there and play loud music." ...

Ice-cream issues in Arlington

what?!? Shane Curcuru reports that Arlington is in the grips of an ice-cream shortage:

... The local Stop & Shop on Mass Av in Arlington has one of its two frozen food aisles unplugged and emptied. No ice cream nor frozen novelties were in evidence throughout the store. ... Stop and Shop also has planned for this contingency, and lists four other stores within a 5 mile radius of zip 02476; note however that time of day and traffic conditions may require you to plan for extra time and bring your own cooler and icepacks to ensure the proper temperature conditions of your purchases. ...

These doors don't recycle - but they don't close, either

Johnsu01 asks:

Anyone else see the Braintree train start to leave Downtown Crossing with its doors still open and people still trying to get on the train tonight around 6:20pm? ...

Earlier:
Dammit, they've got a schedule to keep.

What's a girl gotta do to get some heat in this town?

Maggie is looking at a great apartment, but with a hitch: Heat and hot water are not included in the rent (it's in a house). She wonders how much people around here pay for heat.
