Drug suspect clad only in pajamas fails to elude police

Man in pajamasWhen a bag full of drugs and cash came flying out of a third-floor Roslindale apartment yesterday, officers attempting to serve a warrant at another apartment quickly determined somebody might not be happy to see them - especially when they then saw a man race out of the apartment in just his pajamas.

According to the Suffolk County District Attorney's office, Luis Portalatin, 28, of Roslindale, failed to elude police as he ran from his Paine Street apartment shortly after 9 a.m.:

Portalatin tried to flee the area, making his way over several fences and through neighboring yards despite his lack of footwear. Officers took him into custody on American Legion Highway.

Police found 452.18 grams of heroin and 182.86 grams of cocaine in 24 bags of various sizes, along with $15,890 in bundled cash in the bag Portalatin allegedly tossed out the window, the DA's office says. He was arraigned this morning on drug-trafficking charges in West Roxbury District Court.

"He wasn't the one the officers were looking for, but they arrested him just the same," DA Dan Conley said.

Innocent, etc.

Police: Man who robbed banks to buy scratch tickets now into defrauding jewelers

Timothy B. Elliott of Pocasset was arrested in Downtown Crossing on Tuesday on charges he used a bogus check to defraud a Washington Street merchant of $24,000 worth of jewelry.

Boston Police report that after his check bounced, Elliott contacted the jeweler again in the hopes of scoring more rocks. The jeweler contacted police, who waited in the shop in the Jeweler's Building, 33 Washington St., and arrested Elliott on a charge of larceny over $250 when he showed up. Police say they're now looking at whether Elliott has anything to do with other similar incidents in the area.

Last year, a judge let Elliott keep $1 million in earnings from a lottery ticket even though his purchase of it violated his probation on the bank-robbery conviction.

Innocent, etc.

RIP, Fenway Mickey D

Cosmo was right, except they didn't wait 'til April.

The McDonald's on Boylston St in the Fenway closed unceremoniously and without notice early this week. I've been meaning to go over there to take a picture of the remains, which reportedly include the golden arches "sticking out of a dumpster in the parking (lot)." If anyone gets a chance, please post a snapshot in memoriam.

At least the Burger King fans/addicts in the neighborhood are happy...

ETA: Had to run earlier, no time to fill in the background, which is that the Red Sox have transferred ownership of the McDonald's plot to the Abbey Group, which developed the nearby Landmark Center a few years ago. It will indeed serve as a parking lot until the market improves and development becomes financially feasible. (As to Jimmy Fund contributions, I can't say.)

In return for the lot at Boylston and Jersey, the Abbey Group passed ownership of a similar-sized lot at Van Ness St and Yawkey Way to the Red Sox, again for future development.

Police break up rumble before anybody gets hurt

Boston Police report arresting two teens on weapons charges in connection with a brewing street battle between rival groups outside the Green Street T stop in Jamaica Plain yesterday afternoon:

... Officers observed one young man removed his sweater and place both hands in the air and get into a fighting stance. Officers immediately exited their marked police vehicle to look into this situation and while doing so heard one member of the group exclaim an expletive at the other group. Officers spoke to the young man who was yelling and he explained to the officers that one member of the other group had put his hand in his pocket and pointed it in his direction. ...

David Arias, 17, of Roxbury, was charged with unlawful possession of a firearm and unlawful possession of ammunition. Eric L. Ortiz, 17, of Roxbury was charged with carrying a dangerous weapon.

Innocent until proven members of either the Sharks or the Jets.

They may not have any vampires, but I think I see a sucker

Lynne Mooney Teta, headmaster at Boston Latin, sent out a letter to parents and faculty explaining that there are no vampires at the school:

The notice, which was addressed to faculty and students and forwarded to parents, did not say exactly what the rumors were. Teta's office referred questions to a Boston schools spokeswoman, who didn't immediately have a comment.

"Seriously?" said Melissa Duggan.

Police visited the school on Wednesday to help cover the identity of their vampire friends explain to the students what rampant rumors can do to disrupt the student population.
