AP finds drugs in the water; MWRA doesn't test for them

The AP has been busy, finding lots of drugs in people's water. Sadly, Boston is on the list of cities that don't test for this stuff. Look on the bright side; you could live in a city run these morons:

Arlington, Texas, acknowledged that traces of a pharmaceutical were detected in its drinking water but cited post-9/11 security concerns in refusing to identify the drug.

Metro Moments with Mumbles

Yesterday's installment of Metro Moments with the Mayor has two juicy gems. First, Mumbles tackles Verizon FiOS, or more appropriately, The Internet Service You Can't Get in The Technology Center of The East Coast. Second: he wants $50-100k red light cameras. Ahh, Massachusetts, where the answer to everything is civil fines.

Battle of Bunker Hill

Charlestown - Charlestown one square mile of mixed up, lost souls. A community that once took pride in watching out for each other. A neighborhood where respect and pride came in the name of a gentle smile, a tip of the cap. That neighborhood is gone forever. Is that for better or for worse?

Muggers Take Note

The MBTA is nearly doubling the number of cash machines within its subway stations - and the cash-strapped transit agency will pick up an extra $226,400 a year in the process.

The T’s board of directors yesterday OK’d going ahead with leases with Bank of America, TD Banknorth and Select A Branch Inc., to put a total of 19 ATMs in stations, up from 10 that were previously provided by Citizens Bank under a prior contract.

Bank of America won with a $30,000 bid the right to place just one ATM in the busy Park Street station.

Repairing our high hazard dams using Chapter 40T

The heavy rains of the past two weeks have given rise to reawakened concerns about the condition of the State's dams. Fortunately, legislation under consideration by the General Court will provide an innovative method of financing needed dam improvements and eliminate some high-hazard dam threats.

Ugh, those smelly brakes -- do they cause cancer?

It's become a most unpleasant part of my daily commute: the smell of commuter train brakes. When I get off the train, I flinch at the odor, which puts me in the mind of week-old diapers on fire.

I don't think it was this bad a year ago, and I notice I'm not the only one who's asking why. To a Wilmington commuter, The T's Dan Grabauskas suggested:

"Economy" "Hardware"?

I always wonder: does anyone know where Economy Hardware got their moniker? Is it named after the founders, or something? Or is it whimsical, like "Banana Republic" or "Aeropostale"? A clever, winking retail satire, like "Monster at the End of this Book"?

Another Troubled Bridge

Just got this from TransitWorks:

To all Fairmount Line customers:

Due to the unscheduled closure of the Columbia Road Bridge there will be no commuter rail trains allowed to operate on the Dorchester Branch until the necessary repairs have been made. This is expected to last into this evening’s peak hour commute; however we anticipate that regularly scheduled service will resume for tomorrow morning.

Please note the following alternative arrangements:

Passengers going to Readville should use the Franklin line
