Holiday time recipe--for anyone interested:

Hey, folks:

It's the holiday time again, and I figured I'd share my favorite recipe with you all for anyone who'e into baking. If others are willing to put in their favorite recipes for the holidays, no matter what it may be, you're more than welcome. Here goes:

Chocolate Pound Cake with Rich Chocolate Glaze:

Cake:

2 cups all-purpose white flour
2 cups of sugar
2 sticks of unsalted butter (I always melt the butter first)
3 large eggs
1 tsp. vanilla extract
1/4 tsp. salt
3/4 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. baking powder

The Universal Hub Thanksgiving Dinner

Sad to say, I don't have a kitchen this Thanksgiving. We're ripping out the walls and ceiling of the now-empty room where it stood. I don't even own an oven! So instead of my usual 24-hour cookathon, I'd like to host a Vitual Thanksging this year on Universal Hub.

I hear that there are fresh turkeys to be had in Brookline (as a public service of course!). I'll start with that. I usually cut the skin in places and shove in garlics. Then I annoint the beast with a mix of melted butter, sage, old bay, and gravy master. Stuffing contains the usual things, with some onions for flavor and water chestnuts for crunch. Sometimes, bacon or chicken sausage gets tossed in too.

What are you all going to bring for sides and desserts?

Announcing another blogger in Lynn

Lynn has another blogger. Some of these blogs have been mentioned right here on Universal Hub, helping to put Lynn back on the map as a place to be. (Um. Yes. Lynn was once hopping mad with activity that wasn't all sin.) Downtown, in particular, is on the rise and full of potential, even in this current real estate market.

This poster invites all Lynners, wannabe Lynners and potential visitors to take a look, visit Lynn, and contribute comments.

New Tool to Pay for Old and New Infrastructure

Here is one useful approach to insure that those wanting infrastructure and benefiting more than the community at large will have the option to finance such improvements on favorable terms:

WHY WE NEED CHAPTER 40T TO SELF-FINANCE A PORTION OF THE COMMONWEALTH’S TRANSPORTATION INFRASTRUCTURE NEEDS

Building Our Infrastructure without Reducing Funding for Social Services

Sat, 10/27/2007 - 04:01 — vidchair
WHY WE NEED CHAPTER 40T & HOW IT CAN BE USED

Our State and municipal budgets are under tremendous financial strain. There is a huge back log of State and local infrastructure projects that need to be addressed. It is a rare community that is able to fund all the water, sewer, roads and other infrastructure needed to support existing neighborhoods and new desired development.

Give me a break...

There are times where I really hate being associated with Cambridge, Massachusetts.

I heard that Cambridge officials had put a stop to the local Boy Scouts care package drive for the troops in Iraq at polling places because "political messages are not allowed inside polling places."

Now, in the interest of full disclosure, not a fan of the Boy Scouts based on their history of and current practice of discrimination, particularly of homosexuals and not a fan of the war-we need to be out of there.

Abolish the MBTA Authority Structure

The art show went from 6-8, so I figured if I looked for the bus 86 from Harvard Square to Lechmere at around 6:30, I could enjoy at least one glass of wine and catch an hour maybe 45 minutes of the show. The stop was full of people shivering at 6:35, and finally 20 minutes later the 86 came, nearly empty, AND WENT RIGHT BY!

West Side Story--My Own Synopsis:

Hey folks! Once again, I've decided to break from blogging about Boston affairs, and blog about other things. Although I've written other diaries in the past about my alltime favorite film, West Side Story, here is my own synopsis of it. Here goes:

State college underfunding: Classist?

The state wants $2 billion to fix its college system, but does that conceal a classist public/private school divide? A Salem Blog is not optimistic.

Things Howie Carr won’t tell you about his drinking buddy Ratso/deep throat Murphy

In September Murphy was trying to keep two jobs a $100,000 + state job and his $85,000 councilor seat

He is the one that tattled on Flaherty for having an expired City Council President placard in his window. How does Howie get is inside anonymous City hall info? Ratso gives it to him.

Turned his back on 41 well trained battle worn Boston Municipal police offices. They all got laid off in January and most of them were friends who had helped him win elections.

Do they have all the color glossies as evidence?

A friend of mine who lives in Cambridge received a $1000 ticket in the mail for "illegal dumping". When she called Officer #4 to ask why she received this ticket, as she doesn't even live in Boston and hadn't been anywhere near the dump site, she was told "your address was on something we found".

The New Boston.com

OK, so there's a new Boston.com. To me it looks flatter and more crowded, and it's harder to find stuff (though that will probably go away as I get used to it). Here's part of what they say:

Bostonostalgia...

I've been on a run of "gee I miss..." lately. For example:

Gee I miss Newbury Pizza.

Gee I miss Conran's on Exeter St.

Gee I miss the Hancock observatory.

Gee I miss "Where's Boston."

Then there's the Harvard Square version, which is somewhat longer... And includes some things that are nominally still there.

Gee I miss The Coop.

Gee I miss The Harvard Square Cinema.

Gee I miss The Wursthaus.

Gee I miss Discount Records.

Gee I miss The Spa.

Gee I miss Ruggles Pizza.

Gee I miss 10 Arrow,

What spots do you miss? What's new that makes up for it?

The Forces of Nature and Why People must Respect It:

Today, I'm taking a break from posting about Boston's politics to blog in something different. Here goes:

Much has been noted, and said about the force(s) of nature kicking back when people have shown little to no respect for it.

Nature, I believe, is a very strange, if not intense and exciting phenomenom that frequently works in various, if quirky ways. Nature can be beautiful, yet ugly. It can be gentle and yet harsh. Nature can also be calm, and yet it can also be tempestous, wreaking much havoc and destruction towards anything and/or everything in its path.

Charlie Can't Get On That Train

My neighbor just rang my doorbell begging for candy. I looked across the street and asked his mother why the light was out at their house. She tells me her husband is stuck at South Station and can't get home to dish out their own sugary goodness. The Greenbush line has taken cars away from the Franklin Line and that last train was so full that he couldn't even get on. On Halloween the T is as scary as ever.
