See that blue checkmark at the top of that tweet? Twitter now charges $8 a month for that ($1,000 a month for organizations), and removed them last week from most of the previously checkmarked people and groups who got them for free by proving they were somehow notable. Read more.

Harvard is following BC's lead and banning students from riding or even just storing scooters and bikes inside its buildings and warning them to de-bike on certain hallowed ground, such as Harvard Yard. The Crimson interviews one of its own sports editors, who is simply aghast, and another student who had her scooter stolen when she was forced to leave it, unlocked, outside.

MIT News reports researchers may have figured out how to keep algae from growing on glass surfaces: Coat the glass with "a material that can hold an electrostatic charge, and then applying a very small voltage to that layer," which in turn repels the algae, which have a negative charge on their cell surfaces. The Cambridge Fire Department reports Cambridge firefighters responded to Faith Lutheran Church on Broadway at 5:29 p.m. for what turned into a six-alarm fire. Around 8:15 p.m., fire was shooting through the steeple, on the verge of collapse. The department reports no injuries.

Cambridge Police report they are still looking for a man who didn't let an apparent broken arm stop him from breaking into two lockers at the Porter Square Planet Fitness - from which he made off with wallets and car keys back on Feb. 14. Read more.

The Harvard Crimson reports on a swatting attack that involved four black students being awoken by campus police in riot gear pointing rifles at them and ordering them to raise their hands and walk out of their rooms.

The false report was an apparent example of “swatting” — the act of placing a false emergency call with the intention of harassing a target by provoking a forceful police response.

The Charles River Conservancy has set June 17 for this year's City Splash and One-Mile Swim, during which you'll be able to jump into the Charles from the Fiedler Dock on the Esplanade. Because the event and race have proven so popular, pre-registration for time slots or to enter the race will be required, although the group has yet to set up online pages to do so.
