The Boston Licensing Board recently gave Sagarino's, 106 South St., the right to sell liquor in pint and half-pint bottles, after the store argued customers living in tiny units want the freedom to buy smaller liquor bottles to match their smaller storage space. Read more.

For years now, city officials have resisted letting liquor stores add nips, half pints and pints to their stock because the sort of people who buy them are the sort to just toss them on the ground nearby when they're done. A Leather District market currently banned from selling the smaller bottles, though, says its customers are different and is asking the Boston Licensing Board to let it sell liquor in volumes as small as a half pint. UPDATE: Hearing continued to April 5.

Two men trying to sneak their drinks out of Savvor on Lincoln Street at closing time on Jan. 16 didn't count on an off-dury security person hanging out at the employee door they tried to use. When he told them to leave the drinks inside, one held him while the other stabbed him repeatedly, a BPD sergeant and the bouncer told the Boston Licensing Board at a hearing this morning. A peeved citizen complains about a situation on South Street this afternoon:

This car doesn't have a resident sticker and is in a resident spot. I approached her bc I have a resident sticker and was waiting for a spot to open up. She basically told me "so what, not my problem, I have an appointment". Please send meter maid and ticket! Didn't make the situation any better having my 2 year old witness this lady yelling at me and I never raised my voice at her.

The city replies that justice is done:

Beijing Kyoto, 112 South St., will be replaced by a sit-down restaurant serving ramen-noodle soup, assuming the Boston Licensing Board approves.

Koichi Watanabe will re-open the restaurant as Amateras, with 45 seats.

Meanwhile, the new owner of the shuttered Apollo Grill and Sushi, 84 Harrison Ave., says she's extensively remodeling the place so that she can re-open it as a Panera-like bakery cafe, only one focused on Chinese food.

Separetely, the owners of Chatime on Harrison Avenue want to open a second outlet at 18 Hudson St. that would be open until 11 p.m. most days, but 1 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays.

South Street steam leak

South Street steam. Photo by Joe Yuska.

Firefighters began evacuating 76 South Street around 9:40 a.m. when a steam pipe under the street failed as only a steam pipe can, turning the building into an instant shvitz with steam pouring into it.

A hazmat team was also called in, because old pipes could be lined with asbestos.
