Crying fowl: Possible ban on ducks in Cambridge ruffles feathers

The owners of three Cayuga ducks and two Wyandotte chickens are blogging to keep Cambridge from banning their pets.

Seems the People's Republic currently doesn't regulate domestic fowl, but apparently some neighbors of an eight-person co-op house on Putnam Street are clucking about odors, noise, rats and, of course, the specter of deadly flu strains.

Save the Ducks says that's just daffy: The birds are clean, there are no rats and Cambridge shouldn't waddle behind New York City and neighboring Arlington in promoting urban agriculture.

Probably some nasty vegan neighbors. Asylum for illegal aliens, no room at the inn for duckies.

Most vegan neighbors welcome the natural reduction of pests in their gardens that results when there are major bug- and weed-eating creatures next door.

The owners of the fowl were just plain rude and disrespectful to the abutters. They never contacted any of them before bringing in the fowl. They knew fowl weren't allowed. They not only illegally brought the fowl into the city but they purchased 10 hens from a dealer (minimum order) and kept two then gave 8 hens to local residents. They flaunted the law from the beginning and got others to do the same. Who doesn't know that you don't put a coop within 6 inches (literally) of an abutters fence? It's a matter of record that they knew their duck pool was filthy and smelled really bad so they purposely moved it next to an abutters fence. It was a deliberate act. If they couldn't stand the smell why would they think the abutters would tolerate the smell? The abutters complained to them directly about the odors amongst other things and they ignored them saying it was their yard and they could do what they wanted. Now they are admitting they had problems with their compost amongst other things and are fixing it. Too late, that is what the abutters tried to tell them from the git, the abutter's had legitimate complaints which the owners of the fowl are now verifying with their actions and their words. In order to get folks to sign their petition they are lieing through their teeth. There are so many discrepancies in their story it just doesn't make sense. They lie, lie and lie. From the time they brought the pets into their yard they told anyone who questioned them about the fowl that they were grandfathered to have them. Lies!! They started off lieing to the neighbors and the public and they are still lieing. They had fights with the neighbors over the fowl now they are trying to make everyone believe they never heard any complaints from the neighbors. Liars!! Now they want to mediate with the neighbors. Who will mediate with others who are breaking the law. That doesn't even make sense. The ordinance was put there for a reason to protect the safety and health of the public. State law says no fowl or livestock within city limits. Time for the fowl to go!!
