Flight of the Vuvuzelas

When the sound went out at Phoenix Landing in Central Square as the US played England, fans recreated the sound of those South African horns.

I always wanted to get a hold of one of these horns and drill finger holes in it, to play a tune, I wonder if there's a diagram of where to put the holes. The worst thing about them seems to be that they only play one note.

Btw., even without holes it has two tones (about one octave apart).

The most horrible, annoying thing to befall World Cup games ever. So obnoxious. I had to mute the sound on the Sunday matches I watched.

I actually wanted to watch Saturday's game, but with the choice between turning it off and watching it on mute, I decided to check the score online and watch something else. It sounded like thousands of angry bees -- huge and sting crazy ones.

Is anyone anywhere actually watching with the sound on? I didn't last five minutes. All because the white people who run football are afraid of being called racists.

Were you watching football on?

Not even MaracanĂ£ is that noisy during a Fla-Flu. Does everybody have to blow those darn things, all at once? Can't some of them find something else to do - bang a drum, throw some firecrackers - that makes less noise? It's going to affect the matches, as the players can't hear each other.

That said, any recommendations on a good place to watch the Slovenia match on Friday?

Both Precinct and the Independent were full of soccer supporters last Saturday, and I expect the same will be true for US-Slovenia and US-Algeria.

I don't mind them but I miss the audible chants you used to hear the fans singing in internationals. Some of them were quite funny (between European countries) as they dredged up issues going back to the World Wars.

And did they increase their pseudo-vuvuzela volume when one team earned a corner kick?
