The Channel 38 (WBZ) newscaster narrates as the end of the chase is unfolding live:
"State Police on top of him. Definitely on top of him."

The "definite" part of that narration corresponds to when the officer who comes in from the top of the screen begins to wail on the idiot who had jumped out of his car and was sort of scrambling around and looking like he was about to lie down on the pavement.

Not to say that the idiot didn't deserve a wailing (who knows how many cops and/or civilians he nearly killed on that car chase), but jeez... it don't look good from the helicopter's angle. I'm sure we'll be hearing more about it.

The Globe reports that the suspect "allegedly rammed one cruiser." Watching the video (allegedly of the incident itself) I'd say he definitely hit a cruiser. But then again, whom are we to believe, the Globe or our own lying eyes.

So this guy appears to be a douche-nozzle. Some grandfather walking with his grandson complains to the DN that his music is too loud and said DN then tries to run them down (unsuccessfully). Cops give chase. As boston.com reports it:

"Serra allegedly drove west onto the Massachusetts Turnpike, with at least one cruiser in pursuit. The chase continued, with speeds sometimes reaching 80 miles an hour, until four cruisers surrounded the vehicle near the Temple Street overpass in Framingham."

Jee-willikers, sometimes reaching 80 mph? Jinkies! Lucky they weren't run over by the legion of BMW Series 3-driving scumbags passing them on the right...

drove onto the westbound Massachusetts Turnpike".

I suspect that Globe reporters get bonus pay and points towards promotion based on the number of times they use "allegedly" in a news story. If not, perhaps they should learn how to use a thesaurus.

The suspect is taking the position, face down, feet spread when officer friendly knocks him onto his back and wails him in the upper torso and maybe his face. It's a fine example of using the skill of deescalating the situation. I make no excuses for the illegal behaviour of the suspect. At the same time, I think the officer has to account for his use of force in that situation.

...you should be tough. I think this guy qualified and deserved a couple for being an idiot.

You don't really know what position the guy was going to take. He could have started to gone down and then pulled out a gun, knife or whatever.

That beind said the trooper didn't do the right thing tactically by hitting the guy in the face as it served no purpose. They should have had him at gunpoint and made sure he did not have a weapon before jumping on the guy.

...and violated the suspect's civil rights. The guy is a methhead and a serious loser. He jeopardized the safety of himself and a lot of other people but he still entitled to his civil rights.

I would be impressed if the State Police would acknowledge that, give the officer a reasonable consequence for violating the suspects rights, and then have the officer continue to serve if this incident wasn't a pattern of behaviour.
