The murders were tragic. I hope that he was actually guilty, and that his death is not another barrier to the families of the murder victims finding whatever peace they can.

Metro Desk: Accused "Craigslist killer" Philip Markoff commits suicide in Nashua Jail
http://www.boston.com/news/local/breaking_news/201...

Police arrested Markoff, who was living in Quincy, on April 20, 2009 after stopping him on Interstate 93 in Walpole.

Really? No visible injuries? How do we know it was suicide?

Curious to learn more about Markoff's death, I tuned into New England Cable News figuring it would be my only chance to catch a televised report on this between now and 6 pm. At 1:30 pm, nonagenarian Jack LaLane and wife (in retro 60's workout gear) were hawking his exercise products for the half-hour. The 2 pm half-hour was occupied by the "New G-2" cordless swivel-sweeper with non-slip rubber tip! What good is an all news station unable or unwilling to cover news when it happens? This is where NECN fails.

With all of the retirees looking to hang on (Tom Ellis, Chet Curtis, etc.) and all of the young cubs looking for their big break, couldn't NECN have someone passable on-call reaching out on the air to Sheriff Andrea Cabral, the head of the Suffolk County Correctional union who is authorized by labor law to speak, Markof's attorney John Salsberg, perhaps former inmates who spent time with him (the streets of certain neighborhoods in Boston must be full of these) etc.

NECN had the opportunity to provide breaking news on what was arguably the biggest story of its time in 2009 and instead we have Brit pitchman Anthony Sullivan talking about "tiny dust and dirt particles." Sad.

Ellis has been gone for a few years, but I agree with your general view. It appears NECN does not have enough dough to broadcast non-repetitive news and no informercials. They'll have something at 5 PM. Give Lalane credit for doing this well in his 90's!

Must've been confusing the case with TV.

" Philip Markoff, 24, was found unresponsive in his cell Sunday morning in the Nashua Street Jail, the Suffolk County district attorney's office said in an e-mailed statement, and he was pronounced dead at about 10:15 a.m.

"Markoff was alone in his cell, and all evidence collected thus far indicates that he took his own life," the statement said.

Authorities will investigate to determine the facts and circumstances surrounding his death, the district attorney said.

Saturday would have been Markoff's first wedding anniversary, but his nuptials were canceled after his arrest."

boston.com has a few articles today on the apparent suicide and the case. They have disabled comments on all of the articles. Guess they don't think much of their commenters. UH comments on the story for the last 24+ hours have been civil.
