Four Loko sends Northeastern student to the hospital - well, that and the vodka

The Huntington News reports on a case of vomiting in a can:

The student said she had been drinking vodka and Four Loko at a party at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). She was taken to Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center by ambulance ...

About 90 minutes later, another student was spotted stumbling into a dorm and, when quetioned by EMTs summoned by an RA, admitted she'd been drinking Four Loko as well.

Northeastern's health services recently urged students to swear off Four Loko, in a letter that says nothing about vodka.

This is so ridiculous. Why do the schools even send out these letters? I didn't even know about Four Loko prior to BC telling my husband about it (a grad student there) in an email. Assuming others also didn't, that probably only encouraged them to check it out further!

Idiots.

It's like all the campuses banning the drink ... um, last I checked you can't drink on campus anyway.

Also agree. But can we get a tally of how many people passed out and/or went to the Hospitals to get their stomachs pumped and didn't have it / just drank the hard stuff.

When I was in college, my friends who worked in the on campus Health services building said they had 5-10 cases a weekend.

Hard alcohol abuse is the real culprit here. People need to get their heads outta their asses.

I agree with this. The problem isn't that the drink contains caffeine as well as alcohol. The problem is that the goal is to get "eightloko" or "twelveloco" and "drink AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE! WOO RAGE! I DRANK SO MUCH LAST NIGHT"

its dumb. don't warn about the dangers of four loko, warn about the dangers of drinking too much booze. That email that NU sent out really annoyed me. Way to jump on the bandwagon and miss the point (although all the schools/media reporting on the fourloko craze have missed the point, imo).

To expand on this, I'd really like to find one person who Drank themselves into the hospital exclusively on fourloco (or sparks back in the day).

If any of you haven't tried it, think about trying to drink 24-48 ounces of red bull or another equally gross energy drink.

People just don't do it, because it's not something you can physically stomach without feeling sick. It's like eating more then 2 twinkies in a sitting; your body rejects it before you even get to that point.

This really is just a case of people in trouble trying to find something to blame besides their own poor judgment. My guess is they'll eventually end up passed out again, or in the hospital later down their life again too, if they're like some people back in college I knew.

Maybe, just maybe, somebody will see the alert while sober and know that it isn't an energy drink before the buddies start yelling CHUG CHUG CHUG? Pigs might fly, too.

I have to agree. I barely heard of Four Loco until the recent mass email at BU. The irony is university-wide emails telling us to not drink it is making people curious (and alerting a lot of people who never even heard of it). This include myself, now that I have heard of Four Loco now, I want to try it and figure out what's all the hubbub about.**

I had a small amount (about a shot-glass) just this week at a party.

Tasted like carbonated cough syrup to me. I settled on the micro-brew beer and eventually got into the Knob Creek.

(In the interest of full disclosure, however, I am probably classified as an "old fart" by the average university kid these days, so who the heck cares about my taste in booze?)

It's misleading because the Huntington News comes out only on Thursdays, and the Crime Log (if you read it) had these transports occur over the weekend.

Northeastern's email was in RESPONSE to these incidents (before they became public by this), the incidents were not a RESULT of the email.

How long have people been drinking Rum and Coke? Without anyone raising an eyebrow about the mixture of alcohol and caffeine? Hell, my parents introduced me to this drink.

People mix alcohol with Red Bull and various other drinks containing taurine and guarana and whatnot. The B vitamins and other brainfoody stuff probably mitigate the effects of alcohol a bit. So does being hydrated, eating, and moving around.

What's next, telling bars they can't serve food because people have the notion that they can drink without feeling like ass if they eat at the same time?

How about if people just stop being fucking stupid?

Eeka, that's too much to ask.

Really, the problem is our puritanical and prude views on alcohol, much like other things like sex. We (almost) all do it, but we also all look down on it shaking our fingers, creating a unhealthy taboo atmosphere that leads to warped views and abuse.

This also starts getting into bar closing times, where people feel the need to play catchup after getting a late start, and then blow way past where they wanted to be because of the time it takes for alcohol to get through their system, leading to dangerous situations right when they're being pushed out onto the street.

Our boys like to go clean up after parties in the woods behind our house. They make a fair bit of change off returnables.

Besides cans and bottles, stuff they have brought us:
Jag, opened and unopened
Red bull, unopened, and probably lost in the dark
Other energy drinks
Vodka bottles

So, yeah, there may be some nice myths of sobriety going on there with the energy drinks and alcohol.

Which means we need to ban the energy drinks, of course. Oh, and v8 too because people mix booze with that and ... and ...

Blame everybody but the drunken brats and their parents while we're at it. If the little darlings are clueless, it can't be the result of abstinence-only drug education creating a rich void for mythology.
