OK, so maybe not the biggest shocker that Howie Carr doesn't read the Globe

Carr kvetches the Ware report on the corrupt probation department didn't come out before the election. The Massachusetts Liberal, who notes Carr's 'plaint shares the front page with Bristol Palin, also notes the politically aware in Massachusetts knew about the probation problems because they read about it in the Globe, which broke the story and then kept following it:

We know Herald Editor Joe Scaccia has declared the understaffed newspaper is now in the business of doing exclusive content you can't get anywhere else. So I am truly gratified to know that a cyclist can get to Park Street faster than the Green Line C train. Wait a minute, I knew that too, because I actually use public transportation in this city.

how well informed your average Herald reader is. Maybe if the Track Gals had published the report, more Herald readers would have known about it. They could have put it between their daily articles about Tom Brady's latest bowel movement, Ayla Brown's rocket like ascension into total obscurity and Nick Varano's latest "rape o da cultyah".

Once again, Howie proves you can get rich underestimating the intelligence of people. Note the use of the term "em" instead of "them" in his latest rant for the common folk outside of Wellesley. That goes to show the average guy that Howie is one of them!

The worst part, THE WORST PART is that my sister says that Howie's voice sounds exactly like the late Jean Shepard's. I thanked her for her comment and said that "A Christmas Story" is ruined for me this year, as I don't think they had the Bumpus hounds at Deerfield Academy.

reminds me of waving a bone in front of a dog while getting them riled up in that voice.

Similar tactics.

Here the other frontpage story:

"Conservatives mobilize to keep Bristol Palin ‘Dancing’"

"We know Herald Editor Joe Scaccia has declared the understaffed newspaper is now in the business of doing exclusive content you can't get anywhere else."

That's gotta sting.

Carr doesn't sound like Jean Shepard to me. And I'd like to imagine that if he tried, Shepard would descend from Heaven, and slap Carr in the face with a rolled-up newspaper while yelling "NO! BAD! NOT ON THE CARPET!"

Please. Howie Carr was writing about corruption in the probation department and shady deals involving Finneran/Petrolati long before the Globe Spotlight Team "broke" the story. The fact remains, if Ware's official report, expected back around Labor Day, had come out then, or even on October 28 instead of November 18, voters would have had a chance to consider an official report --covered statewide by all media, not just one paper-- in their balloting.

If the "politically informed" relied only on what they read in the Globe, they would have seen not just the Spotlight Report but endorsements to return mostly all Democrats to office, continuing business as usual.

I remember reading the articles in the Globe over the past few months about the specifics of probation corruption (long articles with substantial reporting work). I don't remember Carr columns regarding it, so I'd appreciate some examples of what you're talking about.

It's pretty revealing to that you assume people can't distinguish between news reporting aspect of the Globe and the editorial page. I suppose that's because you assume that everything you read on the Herald opinion page is gospel truth?

Sorry, Fish, but Howie's hackerama shtick is old hat by now. How often do you hear about someone in this state actually losing a patronage job because of the stirring prose of Wellesley's favorite son? if I recall correctly, the Globe broke this story months ago, and still the Republicans had their asses handed to them on election day. Bad candidates are bad candidates, I don't care which party they're with.

But he has always talked about it. But Carr isn't really into "investagive" journalism. He kind of just barks from the sideline about stories he hears from friend in government.

He kind of acts like he has been retired for basically his whole career. He doesn't really "work", he kind of just talks about what he wants to and people listen to him.

for the first time in many years. They approximately doubled their membership in the state House of Representatives and even got some Globe endorsements.

You can't have it both ways...either Carr wrote about it before the election, as well as the Globe, making at least 2 papers reporting on the probation department- OR- voters needed more information, not "just one paper" as you said. Which is it, one paper, the Globe, reported on it before the election, or Carr wrote about this long ago as well and its old news?
Plus, I'd be curious about his research methods for it, because he is usually an opinion writer, not investigative. Where did he get his information.

But he has talked about it for a long time. Carr has many friends in government agencies who tip him off on different scams throughout the government.

I think it is kind of old news. I also never thought it to be that bad from what I saw, although it doesn't really look good when you get all the details.

Or he makes it up, and the stopped clock rule is at play.

I'm kind of reminded about the recent fracas in Somerville over firefighter hiring. People screaming about something fishy going on, and woe this poor veteran....aaaaaaand it turns out to be a matter of paperwork timing and red tape.

But the Somerville News got to climb onto its high horse and sulk about the level of discourse in the community, which is always funny.
