Peterborough Street restaurant row slated to re-open in June

A June opening is anticipated for all 7 restaurants, according to Theo Associates, which handles leasing for the Peterborough Street building that burned down two years ago.

The company says Thornton's Fenway Grille, Swish Shabu (Japanese hot pots), Fenway Phoenix Cafe (breakfast, soups and sandwiches) will join stalwarts Rod Dee Thai and El Pelon. A "New York Italian pizzeria" is close to signing up, Theo says, adding, "one of Boston's most iconic take out venues also getting ready to announce plans." That would be Speed's Hot Dogs, opening its first permanent location after years serving dogs out of a truck in Newmarket Square (the truck will remain there).

I am sad that this unique opportunity to re-develop restaurant row is considering a hot dog place and yet another pizza joint. A "New York" italian pizzeria next to Fenway Park - seriously?!?

I'm not expecting first class dining, but do we really need to be second rate just because we are the Fenway? I feel like this ALWAYS happens here. To me, this is just as bad as putting in a Store 24 or 7-11. Mom and Pop doesn't have to mean this stuff, does it? A cafe will be nice, but Pavement Cafe is opening up a second location in 1330 Boylston, should be some competition there - and please do the neighborhood a favor and LOSE the Phoenix in the name. The fire was devastating enough, we don't need to be reminded of it any longer.

And yes, the rental market is hard, and Landlords need to rent space to those that want to rent space. I understand this.

I know I'll get slammed with comments, but I honestly love this hood and feel like we always get the short end of the stick here. We don't have to be a clone of the South End, but let's face it - the neighborhood HAS EVOLVED - this is not student central any more -there are all kinds of residents here, and that's what makes it so great.

Come on Monty & Theo Associates - you can do better than this.

Given that this is the Fenway, I assumed the name had something to do with the nearby newspaper headquarters. Maybe not?

Although the Phoenix headquarters are literally two blocks away, I personally didn't get the vibe reading this post that a place selling "breakfast, soups and sandwiches" (to quote Adam) is related to the paper.

Rather, I guess that "Fenway Phoenix Cafe" is a nod to the fire that consumed the whole row two years ago and the fact that most of the same restaurants are returning there. Two years ago, in the months following the fire, at least one community group had an evening meeting where the agenda was how to keep the big chains (convenience stores and restaurants) from taking over when the space is rebuilt.

I'd guess it's about rebirth after the fire. Anon's right, no need to memorialize the tragedy, and the rebuild process certainly hasn't been glorious and heroic.

Let's start a protest!

(!!sarcasm alert!!)

Glad to see someone but a cafe in the row. What is there to protest? The name? Grow up !! (!!sarcasm alert!!)

As much as Stephen Mindich likes to dabble in new ventures, I don't think there's any connection.

... there aren't as many startups who can get any kind of funding at all. So you're a lot more likely to see expansions of already-viable business. Alas.

I'm sorry that these independent businesses are not your cup of tea but to put them in the same category as a chain mini-mart is a bit harsh. Have you ever eaten at Rod Dee? Their food is outstanding. As for the hot dog place, Speed's is always named Best of Boston and was named best hot dog in the country several years back. And who knows, the pizza place might be good and you might enjoy it. There are several other great restaurants in that neighborhood: Tasty Burger, Citizen, and Church just to name a few. Not sure what exactly you are looking for but perhaps you should give these places a shot.

Not to mention El Pelon!!! I'm salivating just to think about it! I certainly don't get the store 24 analogy. These are very good, small independent restaurants that have been sorely missed.

When will Speeds open?

There's already 3 'za joints in a 3 block radius. Shut it down.

Make it a packy.

But none of them are any good save Cambridge 1. I'd prefer New Haven Style thin crust to NYC style, personally. A joint that could really do clam pizza. But this re-opening is great.

I've had a condo in the "hood" for over 4 yrs. Can't wait for the new group of eateries to open.Like the idea of no chain places. I do not have a problem with the name Phoenix Fenway Cafe. I see it as a positive. Its going to be an exciting time in the neighborhood!

speeds has quite the reputation and was cited in the WSJ as having the best dogs in the country. I do not know what else in Boston would merit best in the country.

the comment above about not putting a "New York italian pizzeria next to Fenway Park" is absolutely pathetic. people in this town need to get over the red sox, which is nothing more than a multi-million dollar corporation. it's like cheering for the Gap.

Some people need to get over the fact that some people like sports. It's a more wholesome activity than doing drugs with the Berklee kids anyways.

In the past few years, you've gotten Church, the Citizen Public House, Basho, Tasty Burger, Jerry Remy's, a spiffed up Baseball Tavern, and Burton's. Plus you still have Trattoria Toscana, one of the best modest Italian joints in the city. I'm not sure where the woe is here. That returning lineup is fantastic: El Pelon, Rod Dee, Thornton's, a shabu joint? We'd love to have all those in the South End!

I'm MC on this point...the Fenway has so many more accessible restaurants than in the South End, at all different price points. But both do have an Upper Crust.

Are you serious? I think you certainly speak for yourself when you say that "We'd love to have all those in the South End..." The only place worth mentioning in your glowing list is Citizens; the rest are utter crap! Then again, I'm sure you have no issue with Stephie's on Tremont either. Also, I'm shocked that they're letting Thorntons back in there after they started the fire...

Great reason #2064 not to live in this backward ass neighborhood!

Wow... it been 2 years. I totally forgot about that event, it was hoped that it would return really fast. I hope 2 years isn't categorized as fast. What happened? Was it insurance?

RhoninFire,
They were going to potentially redevelop the building to a "upscale hotel" with 5 floors from what I heard. So the partnership that runs it argued about that for about a year, before ultimately going in this direction because it was, frankly, easier. Still excited to have them back. I love Citizen's, Remy's the Farmer's Market. Now we just need to get rid of Burger King and get something nicer there.

You know, something died in the neighborhood when those restaurants burnt to the ground that night. I was there. For two years there's been a hole in the heart of Fenway. Let's all try to celebrate the return of restaurant row. I know I miss fish tacos, and I want a neighborhood cafe, I'm tired of getting my coffee at 7-11.

We should be happy that the great restaurants are returning, and that new places are willing to invest in our neighborhood. And don't quote me on it, but I think the paper screwed the name up.. I found a facebook page started for The Phoenix Fenway Cafe, not the other way around. I think the name is appropriate because it shows hope and respect to what was there before.

To whoever does not want to remember the rows past profoundness (fire included) and feel the need to be negative toward the business's of the future... shame on you! I hope all will support the new offerings with open hearts and minds. These are our business's in our neighborhood.
