This thing has been up on UHub for an hour now and there's yet no commentary...? C'mon people! Opine! Whine! Blame! Crab!

I bet this guy has a TRIPLE-wide baby stroller that he parks in the middle of the street! He rides a fixie! He's a hipster newcomer, or worse, a racist old-timer!! C'mon somebody generalize!!

sigh...well, at least it doesn't look like he spent $5-10K on that web site. (do appreciate that it's bilingual.)

NOT for long with a WF there to soothe & welcome the Charge Me More I Get Off On It people. They multiply like free range rabbits.

the "Charge Me More, I Get Off On It" people shopped at City Feed? At least that's what their prices infer. Maybe the "sell me rotten, expired, nutrient-devoid, all-HFCS food as long as it's wicked cheap" crowd could shed some light on the subject.

You are right. The website cost about $50 and a number of hours of my personal time trying to get down the basics of HTML code.

Although pro-Whole Foods, it actually is pro-business for JP. We should not be dictating which part of the JP population should be served and by which businesses. I do not buy into the rhetoric that this is an "either or" situation or to the premise that Whole Foods is the holy grail. I think if we used our energies to actually be proactive we can keep attracting all different kinds of businesses to serve the neighborhood that might be as the JPNC says "a good fit".

I still haven't seen anyone refute the fact that the progressives in JP are hypocritical for claiming to be anti-corporate pro diversity then changing positions when a corporation that caters to them comes to their neighborhood. Sacrifincing their values for, as someone else put it, organic, free range fair trade cupcakes is pathetic.

and what makes you think they are all on the side of Whole Foods? Looks to me like many of them are against the store. That "Whose Foods?" website certainly wasn't created by Republicans.

From across the river, this whole dispute looks silly.

I can think of at least one community across the river that has THREE (GASP!) Whole Foods outlets, diversity and options for poor residents. I'd even go out on a fairly sturdy limb and say that community is even MORE diverse than JP's. Sigh.

Now if you don't mind, we'll go back to the stupid clannish squabble already in progress.

What low-price grocery stores in Cambridge are you referring to? The closest one I can think of is Market Basket in Somerville.

There are two Star Markets, Inman Supermarket, Laverde's market, Lotte market, a Harvest, Cambridge Market, Al-Hoda market. Oh, and there's the Market Basket. I guess none of them are as close to a Whole Foods as the JP Stop & Shop will be, but JP had to beat Cambridge at something, right?

I thought you were referring to low-price grocery stores when you mentioned options for poor residents.

I wouldn't call Star Market low-price, except on their loss leader sale items.

Lotte and Al-Hoda are interesting for ethnic foods, but they're not full-service grocery stores.

Harvest certainly isn't low-price. Neither is Inman Supermarket, and I've seen some really bad produce there. I don't remember much about Cambridge Market, but it looks more like a deli/convenience store than a grocery store.

Market Basket isn't in Cambridge.

Laverde's would be low-price if they divided their prices by 5.

It always amazes me when I go to NYC, which has some of the highest real estate prices anywhere, and I'm able to stock up on cheap groceries and bring them back to Boston.

or any non-Latino immigrants in your "diverse" neighborhood. Oh, that's right, they're over on this side of the river livin' life with the Senegalese, Thai, Vietnamese, Chinese, Japanese, Koreans and other new Americans that don't bitch like the world owes us a curry dinner when a supermarket closes. Why, 'cause our cousins and aunties will just open another. Pobre Latinos -- born without backbone.

There's no shame in that. But it's also not something to boast about, either.

And, really? Somebody from Cambridge complaining about how other people complain? Are you the pot or the kettle?

That Whole Foods moving into the space Hi-Lo has vacated has anything whatsoever to do with diversity in JP.

Is it that you think inexpensive fresh produce is too good for Hispanics?

The generic brands that whole foods carries can comparable to other grocery store prices, but the meat and produce is not even close. Ive tried to do a full shopping at whole foods for my family and have to give up when I tally up the extra cost of fruits, vegetables and meat. It blows my grocery budget out of the water.

If you are really finding your produce costs higher at Whole Foods, it's because you're buying different things than you would at another supermarket. I find my produce costs there higher too, because I can never find organic mini bok choy and trumpet mushrooms at Stop and Shop (so good in a stir fry!)

But if you compare identical produce item for identical produce item (say, conventional Honey Crisp apples, which I paid $2.99 for today at Stop and Shop, but recently bought at Whole Foods for $1.79) you will find that things are comparable if not cheaper at Whole Foods. That's what I find, and that's what the Globe found.

As for meat, yes, Whole Foods is hands-down more expensive than any other supermarket. That is largely a matter of selection; whereas Whole Foods sells both expensive and cheap kinds of produce, it sells only the more expensive meat (free-range, organic, etc.)

Did you read the Globe article you linked too? They made my point, not yours. So I guess I have to ask you, is it that you think inexpensive fresh meat and produce is too good for Hispanics?

My favorite argument ever is the one where somebody starts from the first sentence of a piece (for example, "The prices at Whole Foods on dry goods and staples may be comparable to its rivals, but on meat and produce the store is pricier than its competition.") and never reads the actual piece to find out what it's about and what the conclusions are.

The article mentioned your point - as a 'that's what people say' opener. You will only find my point supported if you read on a bit... to the findings: "if you're a smart shopper, buying produce there turns out to be the same as buying produce at the other stores."

But wait, I guess he did make your point too. That conditional leaves you high and dry, right?

Personally, if the opponents and their political enablers like Arroyo, Sanchez, Menino and Chang-Diaz get their way, I'd like to see an evangelical megachurch buy the property and take it off of the tax rolls. It would serve the opponents and the city right.

Hi-Lo is gone and it's never coming back. I find it astonishingly arrogant that a select few in JP have the audacity to tell the JP community that they SHOULD NOT have the OPTION to shop at WF. What, are the people of JP not capable of making their own grocery shopping decisions? This I highly doubt!

Most people I know who live in the city shop at several different grocery stores since no single one covers all the bases: Trader Joe's has a very limited selection, but excellent prices; WF has healthy options you just can't get elsewhere and is at times competitively priced and at times crazy expensive; Shaw's isn't cheap and their produce is questionable, but I can still get a jar of Fluff and other such items which neither WF or TJ's sells. (Only mentioning these 3 stores since they are the 3 which are within walking distance for me.)

I shop at 3 stores every week. But only the Harvest Coop if for tea and only City Feed near Stony in an emergency. I can't stand City Feed on Centre because they are sooooo slooooowww.

I mean the slow food movement huge yes... slow food due to poor service.. fail.

Personally, I'm still outraged that Videosmith is gone. Why aren't we all up in arms about the Blockbuster bankruptcy? The people deserve...nay, are entitled to brick and mortar stores to rent videotapes. Anyone up for starting an online petition to kick out City Feed and bring back a video store (or at least leave the store empty for a while to bring back some grittiness)?

I have been in JP for 7 years...

The rent is too damn high in JP has nothing to do with WF coming in. For those of you who support the locally only like CF and HCoop keep supporting them. Go for it. I can't afford to shop at either. AND I can't stand the customer service at CF so if you read this... PLEASE email me I would be happy to engage you in conversation w regard to how to fix that.

I personally am tired of driving to Cambridge, Brighton or Dedham to buy groceries. The idea that we can't have decent grocery store here is inane. SO PLEASE stop your pissing and moaning and let WF come to JP. Really it is only going to help bring business to HS. Right now there is nothing there that brings my business. SO maybe if there was a WFs other businesses would feel a bit more secure about moving into the very EMPTY 300 block of Centre and help create jobs and revenue in JP.

AND don't even talk to me about a Latin/Hispanic quarter and diversity! I am a San Franciscan native I was raised in diversity and the Mission and it included Whole Foods.

Spoken like a person who's never stepped a mile out of his neighborhood, nevermind into the Mission, where the mix of people makes JP look like dulce de leche -- just cream and caramel. That's "diversity" in the same way that a love of both country and western amounts to diverse musical tastes. Grow up, hijo.
