Hyde Park street now exporting crime across state lines, police say

The Portsmouth Herald reports two Wood Avenue residents have been arrested on charges they forced a 16-year-old girl into prostitution in a Portsmouth hotel.

Police charge Jean Payoute, 22, and Wayne Miller, 21, somehow found the Nashua runaway and advertised her as an escort available in New Hampshire, Maine and Massachusetts.

In recent months, Wood Avenue and its homegrown Eagles gang - whose members wear the colors of the Philadelphia football team - have become a nexus for crime and violence across the area. In February, two Eagles were charged with slashing a rival at the South Shore Plaza on the same day Eagles brawled with rivals on Hyde Park Avenue. Police suspect a gang member then shot up a Rosslindale home as a warning to a possible witness to the mall slashing - only he fired his rounds into the wrong house. In December, a gang member survived getting shot in the head while walking on Wood Avenue.

Yeah, the home page right now is pretty depressing, but it's just one of those strange confluences - I don't think Boston is anywhere close to becoming a hellhole. In fact, BPD just reported some major crime decreases, although I wonder if that includes the reductions linked to all the blizzards we had this past winter.

Supposedly the opposite is true. Prolonged bad weather (heatwave, deep snow, flooding etc) is associated with reduced property crimes but increased violent crime. A typically offered explanation is that this might be because getting around (to steal stuff) is more of a pain but interpersonal troubles have the opportunity to escalate when people are stuck inside with one another for long periods.
