MBTA gets new boss

Dynamic duo: Davis and DaveyDynamic duo: Davis and Davey

The MBTA's longtime chief financial officer will become acting general manager when Richard Davey takes over the Mass. Department of Transportation in a couple of weeks, the T announced today.

Jonathan Davis, who lives in Medford, has served as the T's CFO and deputy general manager for more than 10 years. Finances loom large at the T as it deals with one of the country's highest public-transportation debt burdens even as aging fleets on the Red and Orange Line go way beyond their original intended lifespans.

"Jon's deep knowledge of the financial and operational facets of the MBTA will serve us well as we continue our focus on safety, service, employees, fiscal responsibility and innovation," Davey said in a statement.

Prior to coming to the T, Davis spent 25 years at H.P. Hood.

One of the great things about Davey was that he came from outside the MBTA and its ingrained culture. Hopefully Davis, in addition to having a name that sounds like Davey, will maintain Davey's energy and commitment to the customers rather than to the status quo. I don't see how his 10 years of experience as CFO will necessarily help him, other than the fact that he is well aware how fiscally constrained the T's operating budget is.

... 94, 95, 96, 134 buses, or commuter rail, I'll be a little less glum about Davey's departure.

How come I saw the story about Graham and dwarfism this morning, and now this appears as though it was posted before that? Every once in a while a story pops up that I haven't seen yet even though it appears AFTER a story I have seen... what gives, Adam?

Every once in awhile, I'll make a story "sticky" so that it's at the top of the page no matter what. I did that today with the harbor-shooting story, because it changed a couple of times (from a vague story about somebody shot near the Bank of America Pavilion to the somewhat less vague story about a guy getting shot after a music cruise that had nothing to do with the Pavilion). But I didn't touch any of the other stories.

Hopefully Mr. Davis focuses more on management and not the shameless self-promotion conducted by his predecessor. This state isn't big enough for three John Kerry sized egos.
