Cute-guy crisis in Government Center

While waiting for a friend, Vanessa keeps track of the men walking by and discovers that cuteness was not in the air. 50 men: 2 cute guys; 48 bowsers.

... And finally, Mia arrives to save me! What is the deal, people? TWO OUT OF FIFTY MEN in my wonderful city of Boston, home of the World Champion Red Sox, birthplace of freedom, makers of baked beans....2 of 50 men are cute?! How will I ever find a boyfriend? How will I ever live happily ever after with odds like these?

Can someone -- anyone -- tell me where to find the cute guys in Boston? Obviously, not at Government Center!

She also describes each of the 50 men.

I'm guessing ole' Vanessa is carrying an extra pound for each of those not cute guys...

Considering that "ole Vanessa" is a fictional character whose blog exists merely to promote an as-yet-not-published novel, I'm not that convinced by her assessment of Boston men or anything else she says.

I think the blog is terribly clever and excellent marketing. And it's gotten all of us reading. I think "her" take is straight on about the Government Center area...it's all court people and government workers. She needs to hang out in hipper places.

She writes so well (then again, I am easily amused).

So, if this is a fictional character then their observations can't possibly be true and a reader should automatically discount it? Do you do that with every fictional character you run across? That's just an asinine argument.

Yes, Great Truths can be found in fiction. Are blogs fictional? For the most part, no. As long as you know that "Vanessa Virtue" doesn't really exist, can you still enjoy her stories? Sure, but with a grain of salt, perhaps.

Most blogs are just stream of consciousness anyway. Who among us really edits our thoughts before we get them out. Besides, it clearly says it's a fictional account when you read the blog. And I agree, Adam, the writing rocks. I think Mr. Anonymous who started all of this may have been one of the 50 men "Vanessa" saw and just assumed that she'd have to be fat and ugly. LOL!

Sherry, I'm not saying her observations can't be accurate, just that the promotional interests of the unpublished author could mean that even more artistic license is used on that blog than on the standard, presumed nonfictional ones. So maybe there were *three* or *four* cute guys, rather than just two, but that wouldn't have made her point quite as well. ;-)

I honestly believe there WERE only two cute guys...poetic license or not by the author. And the fact that she's trying to get published shouldn't mar the fact that the info is quite accurate. There are just some people that no matter how hot and hip they are for a date, when it comes down to the real thing, they're still picky. That seems quite normal. I know I'm very picky myself and would probably do the same thing as "Vanessa," although I hate how many nights I spend at home flipping channels. I think what this clearly points out is the dating world can be hideous! Ha!

fun blog. i read a lot and you can't assume that the observations, although from a fictional character, aren't truthful or from the authors own perspective. it's a chick lit author and chick lit is all about real life, right, so cut it some slack. it's wicked cool. i'll keep reading.

That first comment is typical of the kind of "quality men" in this town. Anonymous assumes she's fat because she comments on the dirth of attractive men around. How would her appearance affect her ability to see, by the way? I can say from experience that attractive men are few and far between in this 'burb. Like gorillas in the mist...

This one is probably a little bit on the heavy side too, very defensive...
