ZipCar competitor entering lion's den

NorthEndWaterfront.com reports that Mint, the New York-based car-rental service (as opposed to Mint, the personal-finance service or Mint, the coin-making service), has put some rental cars in the North End, to go along with its cars in downtown and Back Bay locations.

I was gassing up the other day when the guy next to me in a Mint car was arguing with the attendant. Seems the gas card provided by Mint was being rejected over and over. Some yuppie type bitching at the attendant ensued, then the inevitable "Fuck it, I'll pay myself, I'm in a fucking hurry!"

Chortle...

I've had it happen to me once with the Zipcar gas card- tried it at a couple of stations, and ended up paying myself which was a major hassle.

I've never had the gas card not work on me, but I have found that the cars downtown are NEVER properly gassed up. I know it's tough to find a station if you're unfamiliar with the area so a lot of it is probably lazy members, but Zipcar's response is infuriating when I have to spend the first part of my reservation going to get gas because the tank is on empty. Once I guess it was my fault because I didn't report until the end of the reservation and apparently I should have reported at the beginning but when I did stop and call all I got was an offer for the address of the closest gas station.

I feel like they've really gone downhill in terms of customer service over the past couple of years. I just bought a car so I'll be canceling my membership anyway, but it's still sad to see what was a great, community-minded company go the way of every other rental car outfit.

They should put a map showing nearby gas stations in the car.

It's really not that bad, I emailed a scan of my gas receipt to zipcar and had my credit a couple days later. Total extra time invested on my part was probably 3-5 minutes.

What if you don't have a scanner or a fax machine? Then it is a lot more of an investment than 3-5 minutes.

Maybe a cell phone picture would be acceptable, but the point is, an important part of their service did NOT work properly. Think they'd be as understanding as you if YOUR credit card didn't work for THEM?

I've had nothing but an overall good experience with ZipCar and it's customer service.

Not the old Fleet bank, but like a fleet of cars. That's what ZipCar uses to have all of their cards go to their account and allow them to ask things like odometer and member numbers at the pump. Not everywhere takes fleet cards but you get used to who does and who doesn't.

When I had to pay for my own gas one time, I mailed the receipt in an envelope and was credited the same day it was received.
