Maybe don't bring your laptop to the Cambridgeside Galleria

Yojimboo reports:

I was using my laptop at Cambridge Galleria (their food court is providing us with free wireless Internet) this early evening. Then, one short black boy in a red jacket passed by, quickly lifted my computer and ran away. Some kids followed him, so they seem to be a group. ...

Wouldn't you run after someone if they just stole something from you? I know I would certainly chase them down, especially in a public place like a mall.

Exactly, I'm usually not the one for confontation, but if someone was so bold as to make a move for my laptop in public while i was sitting there they would have got a quick right hook to the face, or a head through a brick wall from behind.

guy must be really timid!

And when on of the boys pulls a gun out from his hoodie, you'll say to yourself "At least I wasn't afraid to chase him!"

cambridgeside Galleria = Dark Alley
it seems like every year around the holidays they have a shooting or stabbing at this mall.i live about 3 miles away and never go there anymore.packs of gangbangers clogging up every inch of the place.you always feel like somthing bad is about to happen.

While I'm sure some crime happens at the Galleria, the place doesn't feel any different from the Prudential or Burlington or any other mall. I used to eat at their food court routinely when I worked on Third Street.

This is why my Mommy is afraid to go there now.....

Malls are magnets for property crime. The galleria isn't any different. Wasn't there a beat down in Framingham? Isn't the Burlington Mall a magnet for car thefts and rapists? Aren't there teen fights and property crimes abounding at just about any mall?

If anything, the Cambridgeside Galleria feels much safer to me because of the lack of vast empty and poorly patrolled and lighted parking lots and presence of people.

I'm with you on recovering the laptop, but it is the People's Republic of Cambridge and I'd be more afraid of doing time for hitting a little black thief, and I'd have to hit the little thief to get him to release it, not to mentinon the little jerk's friends who would also have to be encouraged to leave.

The situation reminds me of Pring-Wilson. His legal fees must be close to seven-figures by now.

Yeah, poor baby. Got into a drunken fight, killed a man, and then walked away and lied about it to the police:

When asked multiple times why he lied in his initial reports to police, Pring-Wilson said, “It was my impression at the time that I was the only victim...I just wanted to go home.”

Not that Colono was any model citizen, mind you. But don't you dare paint this self-absorbed little twit as noble and misunderstood, either. If he did have to kill in self defense, at least he could acknowledge that his victim/opponent was human! It takes a truly entitled brat to think that he had some divine right to just go home and sleep it off!

Assuming I had a laptop (I ran my old 700Mhz G3 iBook into the ground) Cambridgeside Galleria would be one of the last places I'd bring it.

On a related tangent:

Once upon a time, I worked at a Borders elsewhere in the country. We'd have people bring in their laptops to the cafe and then abandon them while they went off to find books, use the bathroom, etc. Computers would sit unattended in plain sight for ten, fifteen minutes. The laptops, including the personal information accessible from the unlocked screens were free for the taking on a daily basis.

Amazingly, not a single laptop was ever swiped during my (brief) tenure there.

I can't say if that changed, as I had to quit my job when my car was stolen from the parking lot.

Bringing a laptop to a public mall, or any public place, for that matter, is risky, particularly nowadays. One can never, ever be too careful.
