“It’s a long way from Ted Kennedy to Scott Brown” - Elizabeth Warren

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. — In a display of political muscle, Elizabeth Warren overwhelmingly won the state Democratic Party’s endorsement on Saturday for the United States Senate seat held by Scott P. Brown, a Republican. With the size of her victory, she avoided a party primary in September.

This video is very well done and has excellent production value.

Warren has a lot of amazing experience. This video puts it front and center.

I'm proud of the sophistication of Mass voters. Recent polls show they don't give a hoot about Scott Brown's birther attacks on her heritage. Very few have fallen for the "Birther Brown" smear on her character.

I'm looking forward to the candidates talking about the issues but I don't think Scott Brown is eager to do that becuase Scott approach is 'anything but the issues.'

Scott Brown's campaign manager Jim Barnett (a Karl Rove trained operative who got thrown out of Vermont by *both* parties) has very cleverly and fairly dishonestly accused Warren of wrongly gaining employment by claiming she is part native american. He has done so without evidence, never mind solid proof.

Both Harvard and Penn are on record refuting his accusation.

At Harvard, Charles Fried is the chairman of the hiring committee. He is also is the person who refuted the accusation. Fried is a conservative Republican who was also Ronald Reagan's Solicitor General, and who testified to the Senate Judiciary Committee on behalf of SCOTUS nominees Chief Justice John Roberts and Justice Sam Alito. Fried said "The insinuation is false," that Warren was hired because she was part Native American. That is an authoritative and trustworthy source that says Scott Brown and Jim Barnett are full of shyte.

But that has not stopped Scott Brown and Jim Barnett from repeating it and that's how you know their full of shyte.

Penn also said Warren was hired without regard for her heritage. Both law schools, Harvard and Penn, cited Warren's heritage in their composite statistics that described the diversity of their law school faculty, which historically had been overwhelmingly white and male.

The idea that Warren invented an identify, which is precisely what Jim Barnett accused Warren of in a recent campaign letter, is outrageous. Warren like most people learned about her heritage from her parents. In my case, my father told me his mother was part American Indian. I have every reason to believe it and no reason to disbelieve it.

Scott Brown actually insinuated in a statement to the press that, Elizabeth Warren's mother was wrong. That's pretty fucked up, don't you think?

The one thing Brown and Barnett should get credit for is controlling the media cycle so they don't have to talk policy. If Scott Brown has to talk policy, he will lose. But what they're doing is disgusting. It taps into the race card and the birther BS.

The good news is that the people of Massachusetts are too smart to be taken in by it. Scott Brown is running a birther campaign. It's dishonest and its cowardly and so are all of his right wing supporters who cheer about fauxcahontous. Think about it, they got nothing to campaign on.

And a little green man in your head.

And Elizabeth Warren will INVITE THE BOOOGYYYYMAN INTO YER HOUSE!

That's his latest campaign letter in a nut shell.

Seriously - that's about all he's got. Freakish boogyman conspiracy theories.

The huge, above the fold image and headline on the Times' website was nothing more than an advertisement for Bit Warren's election, public opinion be damned.

The Democrats had two choices at the convention: pretend nothing was wrong to save themselves the embarrassment of having to start over (and admit they were wrong to anoint her without a vetting process) or go with an unknown like Maria Fugetherlastname.

This is what I see, with no pic, half way down the page on one of the side call outs:

Warren Fends Off Party Challenger in Massachusetts Race
By KATHARINE Q. SEELYE 7:45 PM ET
After a month of floundering, Elizabeth Warren, the embattled Senate candidate in Massachusetts, gained the Democratic endorsement, avoiding a primary fight.

Guess the Time's servers are just out to spite you. Or you're whinging like a baby because ad hominem attacks vs the paper and its fairly straightforward article are easier than actual thought.

Seems the MA GOP only has name calling and poo flinging left. They'd rather disparage and slander Mrs. Warren then talk about Scotties (non) record in Washington. That might work down south with the mouthbreathers, but it's not going to in a state where 60% of the population has a college degree.

I like the part where Scott Brown and Co call her late parents liars. Fun times. Keep it up!

Because I just can't get enough of Howie Carr making that awesomely witty Fauxcahontas joke every single day in the Herald. I'm looking forward to hearing it again and again and again, every day between now and Election Day.

That joke will never, ever get stale. Who could get sick of hilarity on that grand a scale? C'mon: Fauxcahontas! It's so knee-slapping, it deserves endless, ad nauseum repetition! With that kind of laff riot going on daily, there's absolutely no need to consider whether Brown is Wall Street's butt-boy vs. the prospect of someone who is serious about Wall Street reform.

Keep up the great work on behalf of the working man, Howie. You are truly the salt of the earth. See you at the Deerfield Academy reunion, or maybe one of Wellesley's great dive bars!

This blog post is a news story from the new york times about Warren winning her parties nomination so soundly she has no primary challenger. What is it about that news that makes you think it shouldn't be on Universalhub front page? Of course, the comments will discuss the race as well as the news. That's a good thing, imo.

She isn't a minority, proven by genealogists last week, and acknowledged by her this week that the family history was inaccurate.

While I can absolutely see the merit and even advantage in having someone who knows something about the workings of financial markets (and bankruptcy and secured transactions in particular) on the committee when the lobbyists come to Congress to once again say why their paymasters should not be meaningfully regulated, I'm just not so sure that is going to carry the day for her. So many people have managed to get elected to legislative positions at the state and federal levels who just haven't the vaguest notion of what the testimony they are hearing is about that I'm just not sure that being able to say that you are well-versed in arguably the biggest issue of the day is enough to win. A sad situation, that, but I think it's where we are.

I think her biggest problem is that there is some kind of a tone problem. I can't identify exactly what it is, but my wife noticed it too. As each of us spent a lot of time in school, we think that it might be that she often uses that lecturing tone of the professor that you knew was smart and that you were interested in learning from, but that you didn't particularly like for a reason you couldn't necessarily pinpoint. In some extreme cases, that dislike turned to resentment.

While I don't believe that "likability" should be a factor in elections (and will not vote for anyone based on that), I think that we must all concede that it has become one (often, sadly, the most important one) in American elections. While I believe Massachusetts is an admirable exception to a lot of things that have become so mainstream in America, big out-of-state media (that owns almost all local mainstream media outlets) is going to be beating the out-of-touch-ivory-tower-Harvard-professor line to death, which unfortunately, like so many other perceptions not necessarily grounded in reality, has become reality for a lot of people - even here - and perhaps enough to ensure that Senator Brown gets re-elected.

To win, Warren will have to successfully counter that faux reality, and the tone problem that I mentioned earlier is, at least to me, a decent indication that she has not yet done so.

got >600,000 more votes in 2008 then Scott Brown did in 2010. Now he's a long time senator, but really how many people go out of their way to vote for John freaking Kerry?

If you can tell me how Scott Brown finds more votes or gets those Dem leaning Indy's to cross the line for him, I'm all ears. Brown needs to grow his 2010 special election numbers by quite a bit, yet this is an election year with Obama at the top of the ticket.

It's not impossible, but Scotts record of obstruction and general wingnuttery is there. People know about it.

Released internal polls are rarely right, and the one by the news seem to be going out of their way to call it a rat race. Which isn't surprising, there's rating to be had.

Isn't it funny how beautiful people like Liz, and places like Harvard, always make the mistakes and the misstatements that work <\b>in their favor, but never, never make the errors that don't?

Need to bump your federal diversity stats for tenured perfessors? Yeah, I'm native American! Check Out Grandpa's high cheekbones! Now we can fill out that report and announce a "woman of color" on the tenured faculty list! Kumbaya, my Lord, Kumbaya!

Diversity crisis over? Okay, back to blonde hair, blue eyes and business as usual.

I can identify the genealogy of my paternal grandfather's line all the way back to his home country. I can also identify the shorter lineage from my maternal grandmother that makes me 1/4 Middle Eastern, but if I ever self-identified as much, I'd be just as much a laughingstock as the right is trying to make of Warren because I take on much more of my appearance from my father's side.

On top of that, my paternal grandmother has claimed that she's mostly Irish. It's entirely possible. Her name would make sense to some degree....but it could easily be any UK name honestly. But I still think I am some part Irish from her side of the family. Given the commonality of her name though, it would probably be impossible to accurately pinpoint my ancestor's entry records into Ellis Island from her side of the family. I'd have the same problem pinning down my maternal grandfather's English heritage beyond some land records because of how much farmland they used to own.

Many of us have this same story. Someone in the family claims that they are the offspring of two cultures and you are willing to accept it. They may even have good reason to think it and still be wrong. Some of it is how we self-identify and some of it is what's still sourceable. I'm sure if each of us had our heritages pried into, we find some mistake made along the way...a name changed by official document error, a story that doesn't find its proof, a genealogical twist that gives us a whole different story than the one passed down by the family.

So, alright, "Bluto". Go try and prove that the last 4 generations of your family aren't total horseshit. Names, nationalities, follow them back to their homelands if they immigrated only one or two generations ago and see if names match up after crossing the Atlantic or Pacific. Good luck and don't let the press make a "liar" of you too.

The two issues are that Warren, either knowingly or unwittingly, committed fraud in her ethnic identification (a criminal offense) to get an advantage in the job application process and that Harvard was all to eager to satisfy its AA quotas, without verification, possibly denying other AA candidates a position.

But I think the much bigger issue is that Harvard and other Ivy League institutions, which have been preaching Affirmative Action and Diversity for years, are potentially breaking federal AA laws by satisfying quotas with people fraudulently identified as minorities. How many other people have gotten jobs by defrauding the system? How many positions have been denied to minorities at institutions because those institutions have fraudulently claimed non-minorities as minorities on their staff. These are questions which need to be answered.

Care to prove that charge? While it may be against Harvard's code of conduct, where is it again Massachusetts or federal law? I keep hearing those scary words brought up, but no one's yet said a thing of what exactly was violated.

Second, you're right. This is a Harvard issue if they're making no attempt to vet and verify their applicants. I'm not sure how thats Warrens fault, if the family lineage was falsely told to her for years and years and institutions failed to tell her she couldn't claim her common knowledge heritage without proper documentation.

You do need to remember her grandparents had issues with her parents coupling because of that lineage, which would make it seem all the more relevant that if she's mistaken about her lineage bloodlines, that it's been "fact" in the family for generations.

Fraud and criminal charges also require a personal knowingly deceiving these institutions. As much as the GOP tin foil hat brigade wants it to be true, there's simply no evidence of malicious conduct from Warren. And the voters being polled are saying just as much.

Maybe it's been changed, but I remember a place for my name and a few other Q's on my SAT's, with no huge blocks of legalese text. If the was a warning as purport, it wasn't there in the 90's (and I'm assuming earlier)

So again; Show me the law broken, and how it relates to Warren.

Something tells me if there is a law, it's going to fall solely on the institutions for lack of due diligence and vetting, in which case how is it even remotely a campaign issue?

Hint: It's not. Voters don't care and Scotty lead has evaporated while he's desperately trying to use the Rove playbook on the MA electorate.

First rule of showbiz and politics is know your audience. Scotts horribly miscalculating if he thinks this is going to help him, and allow him not to talk about his record of obstruction and partisan voting.

If you can, then please link to a report showing otherwise, but I don't think anyone has accused Ms. Warren or shown evidence of her using a native heritage claim to receive preferential hiring or academic admission. Both UPenn and Harvard so far back up that she identified herself as native after being hired.
What appears to have happened at Harvard is not that Ms. Warren used minority status to her advantage but that Harvard used her self identification on a non-official questionnaire to count her as a minority when complying with federal diversity guidelines.

Unlike you, I missed my marching orders from Deval. (And let us remember that the last "woman of color" that he endorsed, and did robo-calls for, was Diane Wilkerson. How did that work out for us?)

I don't care what percentage of anything she actuallyis. Here's my problem: Liz Warren gamed the system, then lied about it. Much like her mentor, who preceded his tenure with us at Ameriquest, Coke, and Texaco.

Thanks anyways.

It's helpful for you to explain this to us. People who live in the reality-based community don't always have a lot of insight into the weird world of right-wing conspiracy theories and resentments.

You make it clear now that the "legs" this non-story has is the resentment people of your ilk have against an imagined racial set-aside system, and that the lie your propagandists have fed you is that Warren has somehow manipulated this fantasy racial set-aside system to get herself into a job she didn't really deserve in the place of someone more qualified. Tarring her with that brush makes her a proxy for an unqualified minority taking the place of a 'more qualified' white man. That way you can exercise your racial hatred on her for free on account of she's (according to unsourced anonymous expert 'proof') not the least bit non-white at all.

I understand that, for someone with his head firmly implanted in Rupert Murdoch's saggy down under, explaining that the fundamental problem with the accusation of 'gaming the system, and then lying about it' is the absence of either a game, a system, or a lie would be pointless. But we do appreciate your help understanding your particular variety of stupidity, on a purely anthropological level.

So let me see....

She lies to her employer(s) about being a racial minority. Her employers lie to the feds in reporting her as such. They both get caught. She spends weeks ducking the press and issues at least four different conflicting explanations. One of which asserts that all Indians have high cheekbones.

And I'm the racist, for having a problem with all this?

But when it was Tim Murray lying to us about his Speed Racer Midnight Run, criticism of that was perfectly okay.
