Locke-Ober to be turned into new restaurant

PJ Maguire, who broke the original story about Locke being Over, reports tonight:

I just got off the phone with my friend, Jay Hajj, owner of Mike’s City Diner in the South End. Jay and two partners have signed an agreement to buy the venerable ‘Locke-Ober’ building on Winter Place in Downtown Boston. The sale includes the restaurant and its liquor license. Contrary to rumors that the treasured space would be gutted, the new owners fully intend to respect and preserve the rich, historic features and integrity of the first floor, and eventually open a new bar and restaurant in that space.

He adds:

  • The purchase should be finalized in early to mid-November.
  • There are no plans to put a British Beer Company store, or any other 'chain' concept in the space.
  • Opening a new restaurant in the space is at least a year away.
  • Honduran mahogany lovers rejoice!!!
  • Mike's City Diner will not be moving to 3 Winter Place...

Somebody got a great deal on a pre-decorated restaurant. All they have to do is clean it up, modernize a few things, bring it up to code and open.

I'll have to grab my boss and check it out when it does. We're always on the lookout for good downtown places to bring the herds of scientists that we pull in to town several times a year.

See you at the bar, MissModular!

I love the interior and would have hated to see it gutted. Have you seen the ladies room in there? It's this Asian-inspired, dark wood and high gloss dark red paint room that made me giggle uncontrollably when I walked in there the first time after a few French 75s. The private dining areas I saw were very nice, too. I think, especially considering the limitations of that weird old building with approximately no natural light available, the previous owner did a wonderful job on the last renovation.

See you when it opens - I'll be the one at the end of the bar drinking a Moscow Mule, mostly because I love those brass mugs they're served in.

I'm the short, broad-shouldered, curvy one with the mop of auburn hair, likely nursing an aviator, dark-n-stormy, or classic cosmo.

Your Cosmo is on me, Swirly! I'm the chubby one with black hair, platinum bangs, downing a Manhattan.

It is nice to hear that the beautiful interior will stay in place. Unfortunately I guess the upstairs rooms will be gone. I think the place has a future with the right concept. Downtown Crossing is pretty gritty right now, but it's there's a lot of development going on down there and I think it's turning the corner.

Yes, but will they offer Ward Eights and Lobster Stew?

I need to know that Ward Eight will be available, but I was more curious about the Lobster Savannah and Thermidor.
