Some sweeping changes coming to Dorchester, Jamaica Plain

The Public Works Department is alerting residents in the two neighborhoods now that in many cases there street-sweeping schedules will be changing in April. In a notice to JP residents, the department says:

The goal of the alterations is to provide mechanical street sweeping services to more closely follow your residential trash collection day. Currently, some portions of Jamaica Plain have to wait several days for street sweeping following residential trash and recycling collection. ... This will alleviate much of the litter generated by the weekly residential trash collection in a faster and more efficient manner.

A similar change will affect parts of Dorchester.

considering they changed our street sweeping in Southie to Friday, when it used to be Thursday (same day as trash collection). I guess one day off doesn't have that much of an adverse effect, but it seems it would make more sense if they were both the same day, and would make it easier for the trash collectors too.

Which seems to make a bit more sense on the narrow streets we tend to have around here.

How would same-day street sweeping make it easier for trash collectors? It seems to me that would actually make it harder.

We could use this kind of coordination in Allston - currently our trash collection is on Thursday, and street sweeping isn't until Monday.

My guess is if there are no cars parkedon the street that's being swept, then they have easier access to the barrels. On my side of the street, we have sweeping on Monday and trash pickup on Tuesday...I'd rather the reverse to pick up the mess made by people who don't know how to close their trash bags and recycle bins.

if ISD enforces the rules about putting trash in sealed, sturdy bags or closed cans? And the trash people are instructed to refuse to pick up anything that doesn't comply?

Then street sweeping can be just to pick up the lone scraps of things that blow around, not entire trash bags that got broken open.

this would unfairly penalize folks who are have their trash bags ripped open by people looking for recyclable cans and bottles.

I have lived in the south end, Southie, JP and Roslindale and I have seen this happen in each of these neighborhoods. I wouldn't want to pay a fine because I have to put out my trash in the morning in one piece, only to have it ripped open before the garbage trucks get to my street.

Do can collectors rip open trash bags that don't have any recyclables? I thought they usually shake the bag and listen for cans and bottles clinking together.

Good catch, though it depends on how one reads it. I think the intention is (note the comma):

The Public Works Department is alerting residents in the two neighborhoods now that in many cases there, street-sweeping schedules will be changing in April.

But yes, it could also be:

The Public Works Department is alerting residents in the two neighborhoods now that in many cases , their street-sweeping schedules will be changing in April.
