Smoker almost sets BC dorm room on fire; sprinkler works as designed

The Boston Fire Department reports a sprinkler at a BC dorm worked and minimized damage from a fire that started around 4:25 a.m. on the fifth floor of a dorm at 110 St. Thomas More Rd.
Fire caused by smoking material that came in contact with a sofa and clothes. Sprinkler activated and contained fire.
Damage at the one-alarm fire was estimated at $10,000; there were no injuries.

Every other day, there's a story about asshole smokers causing fires that displace others.
Every day, I have to suck in the smoke of assholes smoking on the sidewalks on their way to/from work, or hanging out in front of bars.
Our sidewalks, parks, and streets are littered with those #$@!ing butts and because they're plastic, they never degrade.
Can we PLEASE ban smoking on sidewalks and parks!?

Nevermind that smoking in the dorms is already banned ... or that raising the drinking age to 21 has eliminated college drinking problems entirely because students never hide and binge!

I agree that a ban would accomplish nothing. Still, this kid should be kicked out of university housing!

Setting aside the merits of banning cigarettes, why are you so convinced this was from tobacco? I think college students tend to smoke something else in doors. Something that we used to ban...
Ciggies don't go out
They are treated with chemicals so you don't have to keep relighting them. That makes it likely to be cigs.

They do go out. That regulation has been in place for about 5 years now as a fire prevention method. But that's neither here nor there. My point is simply that it makes far more sense that this person wasn't smoking tobacco:
1. The weather was nice so there's no need to smoke inside.
2. Marijuana is something you can't smoke outdoors (at least in theory).
why can't you smoke outdoors?
In practice, (as opposed to theory) if you've ever walked along the Charles River directly across Storrow from BU, you'd know that plenty of (presumably) BU kids smoke pot outside.
Watch now as the smoker hate here dries up.

Can we ban non-smokers?
You know what is worse than smokers?
Non-Smokers.
People who smoke are inherently superior to non-smokers. All citizens should be forced by law to smoke, no age or medical exemptions. Failure to smoke should be a capital crime. Enforcement at gunpoint.
Seriously though, not that I am not 100% serious about the above so you better hope I never take over a la Cobra Commander, it's your own fault.
In the good old days people were allowed to smoke in their offices or bars and didn't have to go outside to smoke. So the reason that sidewalks have smokers on them is because you made it that way. Also, it's outside. Learn about dispersion. Or perhaps learn about what those cars right next to the sidewalk put out compared to cigarettes.
Cigarette butts belong in ashtrays. When you smoke indoors you use ashtrays. So let smokers smoke indoors and use ashtrays. And put more ashtrays outdoors. Used to be they were all over the place. It's like public trashcans. If you don't put them around then they can't be used and trash ends up on the ground.

Easy fix for that problem
Put another tax on cigarettes. Addicts will pay it, and we can use the funds to pay Habitat for Humanity to build houses for those displaced by smokers.
They already pay
their fair share. We should enact a tax on all candles, lighters, grills, stoves, toasters, hair straighteners, deep-fryers and anything that has ever caused a fire including kids. TAX THEM ALL!
Easier fix
Careless smoker, candle user, etc causes fire. Careless smoker, candle user, etc, pays full costs of all damages resulting from fire created due to their carelss action.

People smoke on sidewalks and in parks because indoor smoking has been banned. Where would you like smokers to go to indulge in their LEGAL behavior, if not the sidewalk? Wishing they just didn't exist is not a valid response.
Even Michael Bloomberg didn't ban smoking on sidewalks in NYC.
