Council President Steve Murphy, a decent guy and not corrupt, should pull papers for Mayor as he will likely wind up in the position by default. Meanwhile, Menino shouldn't buy any green bananas. As Obama's pastor once said, "America's chickens have come home to rooooooooooooost." http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=208t80uceSg

Sad to hear of this setback. Mr Mayor was in the South End yesterday, eating lunch at Stephi's on Tremont. He looked thin and was using his cane but nothing seemed amiss. Walking with a cane can be a bitch in the city, any time, with its brick sidewalks and uneven curbs (we really should get someone to work on fixing tha ... oh, right, that was his responsibility).

Best scenario is he recovers and moves back into Parkman House and continues to govern from there. His mind is in great shape. Let him get others to do his work. Then, he can go out gracefully at year end.

John, you're a good friend to Mayor Menino but your claim that he looks "thin" (seriously?) strains credulity. Did you see him less than a week ago on TV at Fenway trying every fattening food? Further evidence that eyewitness testimony is unreliable and also evidence that he clung to power one or two terms too long, our own Robert Byrd minus the wit (and minus the Ku Klux Klan credentials, although a fellow Democrat). Now, we also learn that "reality" TV show "Boston's Finest," once praised here, is also a fraud. No surprise, since Menino got his start driving for and holding the coat of Joe Timilty, who did federal time for the same crime (fraud). You can't make it up!

Ask the handicap residents of the City how long they have been asking the Public Works to address this? They have money for those stupid bike lanes but they cannot fix a sidewalk that has been pushed up by tree roots.

We have the technology. We have the capability to make the first bionic mayor. Robo-Menino will be that mayor. Better than he was before. Better... stronger... faster.

Statement from Mitchel B. Harris, MD, Chief Orthopedic Trauma Service, Brigham and Women's Hospital and Michael J. Weaver, MD, Instructor of Orthopedic Surgery, Brigham and Women's Hospital:

Mayor Menino twisted his right ankle, sustaining a spiral fracture of the distal fibula. This common injury often requires surgical repair. Today he underwent a procedure to repair the fibula. The surgery lasted less than one hour and included the placement of a plate and screws to repair the broken bone. He tolerated the surgery well and without complication. He is resting comfortably now. He will be in a walking boot and will require the use of crutches for the next couple of months. It is our expectation that Mayor Menino will make a full and complete recovery.
