FBI releases photos of suspects

White hat suspect
Black Hat Guy

The FBI says it is looking for two men in connection with the deadly bombs planted along the Marathon route on Boylston Street: One in a white cap, one in a dark cap. The man in the white cap was last seen heading outbound on Boylston.

Both are to be considered "armed and dangerous," the FBI says.

I don't know if the Globe's live feed was at all the same as what was shown on TV, but that infowars guy was out of control. Who is he, and how did he get access to the room? I also liked the guy who told him to "Shut the f*ck up, we've got work to do." Pretty much the audio went off after that.

Don't know if it was Alex Jones himself or one of his flunkies, but he was incredibly obnoxious. Those guys would be slightly more credible if they didn't do this every time anything happens.

Jones is a complet jackass!

Thanks for that. Could you also estimate the height by counting the bricks? Or just somebody go measure, it looks like 20 bricks up from the base.

Several commenters on the type of bomb employed have stated that they should have weighed somewhere about twenty pounds. I have a cat, and on a regular basis, I lift up and move twenty-pound bags of litter from the shelves to the shopping cart. I can't imagine anybody sauntering around with the load like that.

I think for someone in decent shape, perhaps someone who had trained to carry around a dense 20-pound load slung in a backpack, it would not be a huge burden.

I can't say that these photos are very helpful, but maybe someone will scroll through his or her own photos and discover that they have a sharp image of one of these people.

The soldiers that ran (walked quickly) the marathon were wearing 40 lb rucksacks. Put them at the finish just in time to tear down the snow fencing. Carlos Arredondo was there to support them. They ran to support fallen soldiers.

is pretty easy for anyone in Ok shape that hits the gym. 40lbs over the back is actually pretty light.

Out in the field the military can be rucking 80-110lbs sacks.

They also may have trained for it.

I carried my kids around on my back until they were 40 lbs, plus 5 lbs of Tough Traveller. I also used to carry a twelve pound laptop and charger combo with my dissertation paper stuff on a regular basis. I was just hauling around a 20+ pound courier bag through two large airports.

Women in some developing countries work with their 20lb kids on their backs.

Can't say that I can do that daily now, but it isn't anything excessive if you are used to it.

20 pounds carried in a backpack is really not very much. Backpacks are pretty good at distributing loads.

I feel like every college student in the country has walked around with 20 lbs of books on their backs / one shoulder at one point or another.

Or maybe I just bought too many books back in the day. :(

That being said, hauling 50 pounds of kitty litter feels like you're trying to pick up your car.

A quick google search yielded this about middle schoolers' backpacks:

On average, 6th graders in the study were carrying backpacks weighting 18.4 pounds, although some backpacks weighed as much as 30 pounds.

We're sending 6th graders to school carrying approximately the same amount of weight. If a 6th grader can do it, a slim guy in his 20s can do it, especially if the backpack is designed well and distributes the weight evenly.

Sorry, that was an easy one.

To put it into perspective, bowling balls don't even weigh 20 lbs, and a ball would fit easily into a pack. 20 lbs isn't much, maybe it's the awkwardness of the litter bag rather than the weight.

That's not impossible - I used to lift Womp Rats into my T-16 back home, they're not much bigger than 20 pounds.

By my estimation, that's about 2 12-packs of soda, which I routinely load into a backpack and walk home from the store with. Its heavy, to be sure, but once its on your back its not an unreasonable burden. And that's as someone with a bad back. It might be a touch awkward to get on and off, but I think it fair to assume that getting it on could be done privately and with just a minimum of concentration, I'm sure it could be taken off the back fairly gracefully.

I bike with a backpack every day, and 20 lbs isn't much of a burden if you've got the straps adjusted right. Kitty litter is tough to carry because it's not very dense, but more dense things are easier to carry. Throw about 4 regular-sized bricks in a backpack, and that's about 20 lbs. If you're in decent shape, you can walk around all day with it. You'll feel relieved when you take it off, but it's not a huge burden.

Every guy on line to get into Joshua Tree tonight is a terror suspect? White Hat Bro and Black Hat Bro?

up
Voting closed 0

Yes, because the fact that they're wearing hats means that they have no defining features at all and are completely unrecognizable.

up
Voting closed 0

That was my thought. Looks like every third guy I used to see on the B line.

Wait, so you're saying that there was also a third guy?

hahah my housemates and I just had this conversation.. so we narrowed it down to every male BU student?

...there have to be hundreds if not thousands of young men in Boston who look enough like these blurry bastards to be suspected, reported, stopped, questioned, and investigated. Please, people, be aware but be compassionate. We have to find these two, but bear in mind they're two needles in a very large and innocent haystack.

I think the FBI doesn't really expect to nab them from these photos. These photos provide a frame of reference for the gazillion photos and vids taken at the right time and place. Ultimate crowdsourcing. So, someone has a eureka moment, emails it to the FBI and bingo, maybe a nice driver's license quality face shot.

Game over.

Agreed. These guys are in better photos taken by people at the marathon.

Someone will have a clean, high quality image of these guys.

Two guys from a local burrio joint (don't want to throw them under the bus) just chased down a guy with a big backpack wearing a black hat down to Mass Ave and Newbury. Couple punches thrown. Three blacked out SUVs came out SUVs appeared out of nowhere and took over. I'm guessing its a shoplifting related thing, but still surprised at the near instantaneous response out of nowhere by the police.

Shoplifting at Mass Ave and Newbury is probably a really, really bad idea right now.

up
Voting closed 0

True that. It's been amazing to see how many undercover vehicles -- from the traditional black SUVs to beat-up pickups to nondescript sedans -- patrol this city. Unless I'd seen them with blue lights flashing over the last few days, I'd never have guessed they were law enforcement. The "two antenna" giveaway is, apparently, not a reliable indicator anymore, if it ever really was.

What makes you think they're still in Boston? They've had since Monday afternoon to get away -- they could be anywhere in the country by now, if not the world.

up

I'd bet they have people combing footage for pictures of these guys coming in through/going out of south station or Back Bay station. Those are the main ways out of town.

Then where did the photo of the guy come from, to be pasted into this image? It's not any of the FBI pics and is very clear.

Is the editor implying that someone digitally recreated the suspect's face and clothing and put it into the image?

up

different clothing. Someone should check stock images or GIS.

FBI should also pay the jackass who shopped it a visit. Probably just another internet asshole, but you never know.

up
Voting closed 0

Looks like the same clothing to me. The plaid or print on the interior of the jacket is not very visible in the videos but it's there

up

There's got to be more, especially if they were so close to when the things went off. Hopefully everyone is combing over their photos from the day and area very closely now.

I'm still weird out no one has claimed responsibility yet too. Looking more and more homegrown douchebags?

Maybe infowars needed a new conspiracy? They seem unhinged enough.

Then an incredibly convincing image was created within 90 mins. Why fake

The NY Times editor's "distorted pixels" are just JPEG compression artifacts, which you expect to be greatest at high contrast boundaries. The suspect's hat happens to have among the sharpest contrast boundaries in the image but there are plenty of "distorted pixels" around the "MIT" on the guy in the foreground's sweatshirt or the white on the fire alarm too.

The white hat has a distinctive design and logo. The FBI can easily search who manufactures it. That would tell us where it is sold, which in turn would give us clues on where the man bought it, whether Lynn, Canada, France or El Salvador. I doubt it's from a suburban big box store.

Both hats appear to be Bridgestone Golf Caps.

This is good news, far better than if it were done by a so-called lonewolf. Others are most likely also involved before and/or after the fact. And the odds are considerably better someone will recognize one or both, and drop a dime. Also, the odds are good these guys have been involved with the law before, and that they know people involved in illegal pursuits. This is also good news, because such company routinely rat each other out.

up
Voting closed 0

Even if they didn't involve, or try to involve anyone else, it's still a lot easier to ID two people who hang out together than it would be to single-out an individual.

Someone might think White Cap kinda, sorta looks like someone they know, but not really, but then they might remember seeing him with a guy who looks a bit like the other suspect.

And then the mental wheels click into place and you've got a lead.

someone pointed out is that law enforcement has been taking fingerprints and digital photos of foreign nationals that entry the country for the better part of a decade. That they have clear photos and don't have matches to that database leans towards someone already here or a citizen.

Not terribly helpful, but it does probably narrow down the laundry lists of groups on the radar.
