Shooting in Roslindale

UPDATE: Dorchester man arrested.

Somebody was found shot this morning on Brook Street. The victim was taken away in bad enough shape to have the homicide unit called in, just in case. The victim was found just a few doors down from the scene of a fight that ended in gunfire last night.

The gun violence continues unabated. What can we do? More here.

How about putting some more resources into enforcing existing laws and effective policing?

mostly urban neighborhoods? Why has this always been the case at least in modern times? Almost all murders and gun related violence and crime in Boston occur in a few neighborhoods. Why? Maybe we have a culture problem specific to some of the people in these neighborhoods? Maybe that's where our attention should be focused?

Vermont has plenty of guns and is the most easy state in the country to legally obtain firearms. It doesn't have a gun violence problem, in fact it's one of the safest states, in the top 3.

And BTW: how is Chicago's almost total ban on firearms working out? It's had this gun ban in place for some time now, yet it has a RAGING gun violence problem chiefly among urban youth. It has on average a shooting every 3 hrs. Maybe we should look very closely at the environment and family backgrounds of these youths to determine what the problem is.

you're making far to much sense!

Hey now, can't let on that the rich pale politicians and their supporters are afraid of poor ethic people owning firearms.

You cannot compare Boston, to Chicago, to Vermont. All three have vastly different urban areas: size, density, cultural makeup, gang presence, etc. Gun violence will always be an issue in densely populated urban areas. Maybe it stems from gang violence? Gun bans don't work on a city by city basis, too difficult to enforce.

We should be focusing on predictive policing, crime analysis, and crime mapping. Stop being reactive, be proactive.

If "densely populated" is the determining factor, why don't we have a big gun violence problem in Somerville?

I'm not saying we don't have the problem at all here, but it certainly isn't making the news on a daily basis like some less-dense parts of Boston do.

I don't know what factors into formation of gangs, drug trade and gun violence. There are other factors driving gun violence besides gangs and drug trade but I don't have a handle on that. What is clear, is that a lot of innocent people are harmed by gun violence and it affects the community in significant ways. It affects kids who have to walk to school in these communities. They know lots of people who haven't survived past age 25. It makes people feel insecure in their homes. Expanding background checks and putting teeth into penalties for interstate gun trafficking will help reduce the supply of illegal guns.

Police Commissioner Davis wants this as do police commissioners and police chiefs all over the United States. 850+ mayors want this.

The naysayers argue that it wont help and that the problem lies in law enforcement ineffective enforcement of existing law. BPD siezed over 500 illegal guns last year. That's not lax enforcement. The naysayers are wrong and law enforcement, police chiefs and mayors are right.

Out of those 500 illegal guns seized, how many of the thugs brandishing the said illegal guns were locked up for illegal gun possession? Furthermore, you can go ahead and ban manufacturing of all guns, period, but what are you going to do about the millions of guns that are already out on the streets? Pass another law that makes owning illegal guns illegal? Gun violence won't stop as long as you have idiots like judge raymond dougan in the courthouse.

I can not count the amount of times i have crossed the NH-MA border, CT-MA border and RI-MA boarder in my short time on earth, but what i can count is the amount of times i have been stopped crossing those lines; ZERO! So please go on and explain HOW this will help, what needs to be done is we need to address the source of the violence, not the instruments used.

And if its Young Black Males then so f*cking be it. It not racist and people need to stop walking on eggshells, the Black community has a major issue with gun violence and continuing to blame old white men (the republicans) isn't going to help solve the issue long-tern.

Hey, now. A bunch of anonymous guys upthread have a perfectly reasonable, black-and-white, and completely bulletproof (erm... make that "unimpeachable") plan to solve the problem of gun violence: we need to get as many firearms out there as humanly possible, which will alleviate the problem completely, because hail Satan.

I'll not hear you sully their good names with your eggheaded liberal notions of "distributing more guns is going to make the problem of gun violence worse" and "we have to make societal fixes to solve societal problems." The 101st Fighting Keyboards have spoken: more guns! A simple and elegant solution solution to what is clearly a simple and unnuanced problem.

The problem isn't inanimate objects. The problem is violent people! Banning one means of inflicting harm isn't going to stop people from finding another just as deadly if not worse.

What type of weapon would be as or more easily concealed, lethal, and manipulated than a gun?

Also it would not set off the gun sensors BPD has scattered around the city. Plus anyone can purchase a crossbow, no license required!

For someone wanting to inflict harm, there are numerous options meeting your specs.

Sure, you can do great harm with a knife.

But you can't harm multiple people on the other side of a room in a matter of seconds with a knife.

The problem of guns is the problem of automation of mayhem at a distance from your target with minimal skill.

There was a guy few months back who robbed a place with a hand grenade. Just as small, and just as easy to conceal. Also does a great amount of damage. Where the hell he got this is something we may never know:

Nonsense. Boston actually has a HIGHER population density on average than Chicago. NYC, S.F. and Boston are the 3 most densely populated big cities in America. Cambridge, Somerville and Chelsea have on average higher population densities than Boston.

And no, it hasn't 'always' been a problem like it is today, and has been since at least the 70s. Absolutely not.

As for Vermont, yes, it has a low population density, is primarily rural. Never the less, even though firearms are commonplace there and easy to obtain, there's no violent gun problem. And there are plenty of poor people in Vermont, too.
