A group of grateful Bostonians are throwing a party to thank local reporters who covered the Marathon bombings:
While CNN and Fox News were fumbling the aftermath of the Boston Marathon bombing, Boston's print, radio, and television reporters gave us accurate, up to date reports. National news rushed to be first, but Boston's locals beat them to the facts, reflected our collective strength and, most importantly, showed resolve in the face of stress, exhaustion, and overwhelming emotion. While we were stuck in our apartments, they eschewed rest and made us proud of our city.
It's Thursday at 6 p.m. at Lir, with the $10 cover going to the One Fund. Working local press get in for free.

Before the local news media
gets too much into self-congratulation, let's review what CBS Boston (Channel 4) anchor Jonathan Elias and others were "reporting" on April 19th:
"He(Dzokhar Tsarnaev) did us a favor by running over his brother."
"No tears were shed over the death of his brother."
"This kid, if he survives the night or survives at all" and "two complete idiots". Jim Armstrong, CBS Boston.
I thought journalists were supposed to report facts. There's a lot of bullshit on local TV news.
Boston media being honored for marathon coverage? Please.
Bad enough that anyone would honor the Boston media after this, but almost comical that organizers of this event couldn't resist equating Fox News to CNN in the "bumbling" of the coverage. As if anyone at Fox was "breaking" an "exclusive" report from "multiple police sources" that "two dark skinned terrorists are in custody" on Wednesday. Talk about a false equivalency.
I also hope anchors Geriatric Jack and Ego Ed are given a special honor for suggesting in the immediate aftermath of the bombings that since April 15 is tax day, there was a likelihood that the bombers were conservative, anti-tax, (read Tea Party) types or perhaps a home-grown racist who hates Kenyans winning every year. Great guess, guys. Top Honors should go to the Globe's "Voice of the City" columnist who claimed the little boy from Dorchester who was killed had just run out onto Boylston Street to greet his father as he finished the marathon. Complete fiction in the style of the disgraced Mike Barnicle, as if the true story wasn't sad enough. While some in the media did a great job, for others, especially the marquee players, suspensions are in order, not drinks and unwarranted praise.

Not holding a brief for McVeigh, whom you reference, but to keep the history clear, there was no evidence he was motivated by racism - he hung with some of the militia types, and carried around The Turner Diaries for 'survival' tips, but all he ever claimed was to hate the gubmint cuz Waco and Ruby Ridge and seizing guns and taxes ... (He also said, in prison interviews, he was an agnostic, not one of the Christian Identity types. So sui generis, and thus more dangerous.)
That said, yeah, we had a pale American military veteran blowing up people on Patriots Day, and it wasn't unreasonable to speculate about, even after all these years.

Seriously? I found the newspapers a little bit better than TV, and local was as good if not better than national, but:
The Globe reported the suspects in custody on Monday. And never apologized or retracted. They just blamed their anonymous sources.
I saw reports stating that the local press was more on-the-ball than national. Well halleluiah! Shouldn't the local press be more knowledgeable or the area, and have better local sources?
