Good God: Althea Garrison won't be on the ballot for mayor, but Charles Yancey and the Barstool guy will

Blackstonian posts the list of the candidates who turned in enough signatures to qualify for the preliminary ballot this fall.

David Portnoy of Barstool Sport, of course, had said all along he's running for El Alcalde, but Yancey, the city's longest serving district city councilor, had played coy all along. Also making the cut: Robert Capucci, along with several other people.

But fret not, Althea fans: She submitted signatures to get on the ballot for one of the four at-large council seats.

I truly hope this a$$hat does get elected mayor. I'll be first in line for his removal from office and disgrace as a human being. He is the scum of society and his following of Bro's and depraved girls is evidence of that.

Viva the idiot.

The owner of the site is extremely racist.

I haven't seen anything on there that's perpetuating the oppression of people of color.

I think the other poster was claiming an anti-white/Caucasian racist tint to the paper's coverage.

Why in the world do you assume "racist" only applies to 1)oppression and and 2)people of color.

Way off base on this one.

up

Of course, there's still nothing "anti-white" about the website soooooo

Didn't you learn in school that only white people are racist? That people of color are, by definition, not racist?

That's what they taught my kids anyhow. At taxpayer expense, of course.

Racism is the systemic oppression of people of color.

It can be perpetuated by a person of any color.

A person in a position of oppression making derogatory statements about a group in a position of privilege is not racism. Depending on context, it might be discrimination, overgeneralization, bigotry, or just someone expressing their frustration about systemic oppression.

I'll stick with the standard definition (this one happens to be courtesy of "dictionary.com" but any mainstream source will roughly align:

  1. a belief or doctrine that inherent differences among the various human races determine cultural or individual achievement, usually involving the idea that one's own race is superior and has the right to rule others.
  2. a policy, system of government, etc., based upon or fostering such a doctrine; discrimination.
  3. hatred or intolerance of another race or other races.

Gawd you're an arse sometimes.

You and I both know that the dictionary gives concise definitions of words with little history or context. Like saying that a "slut" is "an unclean woman." Gee, I don't know why Aunt Mary was offended when I called her a slut! After all, she spilled ketchup all over her shirt! Nope, I'm not going to consider societal norms or try and put myself in her place; the dictionary has my back! She has no right to be offended when the dictionary says she's right! Since it's not in the dictionary, I'm going to tell her she just went and made up her own definition that it means anything else! And about those very happy men who I routinely call gay, well, they really should take a look in my dictionary too!

If you're actually interesting in learning about racism, instead of denying it exists or insisting that insults toward white people are exactly the same thing as systemic oppression of people of color, go talk to a sociologist or read one of the many texts on systemic racism, and you can learn why the experts on racism have all come to the consensus that isolated acts of discrimination against people in a position of privilege are not racism. Or if you're insistent that someone calling you a honkey once is just like what people of color go through every single day, then, well, you really owe it to yourself to read some books on racism. Google "white privilege" and you can find several reading lists to get started. "Unpacking the Invisible Knapsack" is a good place to get started. Also anything by Beverly Daniel Tatum.

If a timid 105 lb white suburbanite is passing through Mattapan Square alone at midnight, and a group of 5 persons of color say, "Stay the eff off our turf, whitey", in an aggressive and menacing manner, who's in the position of privilege and who's in the position of oppression?

Has this happened to you?

No, didn't think so.

Happened to me several time growing up in Boston! Both while attending school and once in the Square!

You're funny.

I'll except your first 2 points. not buying the last one by a long shot.

Malcolm X and the Nation of Islam ( to name just one example) had a well-defined, and completely racist, belief that whites were, among other things, devils.

Pure racist ideology, regardless of the conditions that led to the belief.

People make that assumption about the word "racist" because they have basic cognitive abilities.

It is sort of meaningless to use the term without the context of societally institutionalized oppression. Otherwise, if you are discussing something legitimate, it is about discrimination or a bias in an individual case without any societally backed oppression invovled.

Of course in cases like this one, and this is the most generous I can be, assuming that person did mean "racist" in the way you suggest, it is nothing more than someone in a place of privilege being whiny.

I am sorry that you are unable to make this distinction. It must be difficult to go through life that way.

voter turnout in boston for mayor is usually so low that el prez could actually win. the 18-34 year old demographic in boston is huge and is way larger than all the public unions combined. i would love to see the city council squirm if this guy wins. i can't believe i am saying it, but viva la stool!

That soft core pornographer and child penis enthusiast has zero chance. Bro's are not a reliable voting block.

He's obviously doing it for publicity, which he is good at...but he's also playing a dangerous game as it will bring scrutiny like he's never had before.

What makes you think a significant number of 18-34 year olds are going to vote for this fool? Just because it's the target demographic for his antics doesn't mean he has widespread support in it.

Raised $16k in 24 hrs, not to mention over $200k in a week for OneBoston. But hey I know what "fool" I don't support and that would be you buddy. Viva la stool!

we must have differences definitions of that word. Thank you PC Police for your "Useful" link!

is a thoughtful article on the subject of rape humor from a rape crisis counselor considered scarily PC? Did you read it, anon? It's not exactly a rant. It doesn't try to argue against the existence or validity of rape jokes, or hold Portnoy up as History's Greatest Monster. What about it made you feel "policed"?

up

But...they are hilarious.

up
Voting closed 0

Rape jokes can be very funny, but just as no topic should be inherently off-limits, no topic is inherently funny and anyone who thinks there's such a topic (whether that joke is fart jokes or rape jokes) is a hack. Lazy joketelling should not be encouraged.

And if your hackery encourages sexual violence, well that makes it even worse.

I used to think that rape was criminally and morally wrong. But after reading barstoolsports.com, I just don't know anymore...

If Blackstonian is referring to the same document I saw, this is not the official list of candidates that submitted 3000+ signatures, but rather the candidates that submitted ANY signatures.

The signatures haven't all been counted yet. Unless election department sped up their counting significantly, Blackstonian misread an email from earlier today. Only 3 or 4 candidates had made the ballot at last count.

what we referred to is the information given to us by the city of boston election department. and it is a listing of those who turned in at least 3,000 signatures by the 5pm deadline. the 3 candidates who were already verified was due to the fact they turned in earlier. the other 13 people who are unverified as of yet have turned in at least 3,000 signatures which will shrink as names are crossed out and then we will have our final pool of candidates.

I signed Portnoy's papers, because I am a patriot and True American who believe in the self evident and inalienable right to humiliate oneself in public, preferably while wasting a few hundred thousand dollars in the process.
