Chuck Turner readies for return to Boston, starts blog

The Jamaica Plain Gazette reports the erstwhile Roxbury city councilor expects to finish his federal bribery sentence in a Boston halfway house, starting in July.

The Gazette adds Turner is now also blogging, at Chuck Turner Analysis, where he focuses on national economics through a Boston lens:

Given the Pac Man like quality of gentrification, if Boston is to be a city affordable not only for all races but also all incomes, we have to have a strategy to mitigate the gentrifying effect of development. To provide an historical context for considering this question, this reflection will focus on the 1%'s manipulation of Boston’s political process after WW II and the creation of its development tool, Boston Redevelopment Authority.

What in the heck could "Pac Man like quality of gentrification" mean? Is YT running around the maze of the city eating all the fruit while being chased by the ghosts of minority ex-residents? Or does big bald and bold have the wrong video game?

I think "Pac Man like quality of gentrification" is referring to the game mechanic that Pac-Man doesn't stop, even if you quit hitting the buttons/joystick around. Unless he hits a wall, he keeps eating pellets, eating/eaten by ghosts, etc. Even when he hits the wall, he is just waiting for the slightest command away from the wall for him to take-off again.

I think it's not a bad analogy for gentrification; that it progresses and perhaps never regresses. The analogy was hard to figure out due to it being a dated and now obscure cultural reference.

I do believe I encountered Mr. Turner on an orange line train a few weeks. Unmistakable beard.

Is he going to get the Globe to print selections from his porn collection on pg. 2 again?

I'll be honest. I can't wait til Chuck gets out of prison. Look it doesn't get over the fact that he is incredibly morally flawed like all of us, but Turner if he used his potential right, he could still make a huge difference in peoples' lives in Boston by getting out of prison and getting involved in his community and doing the right thing.

If Chuck Turner didn't allow himself to fall to the dark side of the force, if he had been around today as City Councilor and ran for Mayor, because he was so controversial, polarizing, yet extremely popular, he could have been one of the lead contenders to be in this year's Mayor final.

Think about it with so many people running and splitting the vote, Turner's district which is now Tito's, represents 1/9th of Boston or 11.1% (perhaps enough to make the finals).

I remember meeting former Providence Rhode Island Mayor Buddy Cianci at Ray Flynn's birthday party at JJ Foley's on Berkley Street in the South End. These characters Turner and Cianci were very similar.

So why would anyone want to blog with Chuck? Well he will have served his time and paid society for his disgrace and it would be good to hear his perspective.

:...Turner if he used his potential right, he could still make a huge difference..."
