The candidate who sits at home watching the Bruins

The Dorchester Reporter interviews David Portnoy, who doesn't plan on walking in any parades as he runs for mayor this year:

Would you rather vote for the guy running around to all the parades so he could show his face or the guy who's watching the Bruins at home?' Because I'm not trying to appeal to everybody or be very political. I'm the guy, the typical guy next door.

I don't want a "typical guy" to be mayor. I know candidates feel they must appeal to the average Joe. But most likely the average Joe doesn't know much organized labor negotiations, international trade partnerships, environmental regulations and tax codes. We are looking for a leader, not a carbon copy of ourselves. Staying at home and watching the Bruins says couch potato to me.

Yup. How narcissistic does someone need to be to think that people are just going to vote for you because you're awesome and so down to earth.

You're going out there and asking people for their vote and finding ways to represent your constituents interests. Sitting on you ass and watching the Bruins, while claiming this is a good thing about your candidacy, isn't exactly a show that you take those responsibilities seriously.

Back in the day most of out politicians were Lawyers, Educators and Military. Today most of them still are Lawyers, Educators and Military. We want leaders, not Joe the plumber.

This is off-topic, it is just the next to last sentence reminds me of a thought about politicians and I have no idea how to segue into this. A common line I hear from real life and the internet (and the occasional news article comparing the US's to China's background leadership) is we are being drowned in lawyers. And googing now, I found this:

http://www.economist.com/node/13496638 - the second graph in article

Nearly 50% (or the best I can read from that little graph) of US politicians are lawyers. Followed by ~18% by business. Then diplomacy and then military. Academia seems to be roughly equal to military at some proportion under 10%.

So this is very off from your point. I agree we don't want "Joe Plumber", we need people to lead and be informed. That's not part of the typical definition of "Joe Plumber" nor watching the Bruins show that type of quality. Nothing wrong with watching it, but it's not a selling point to vote. It is just that, we also don't need more lawyers either. If we had more people from military and academia as you said, that's probably a plus.

One of the Founding Fathers was a lawyer. Yeah, our modern-day highly specialized lawyers are just like him and background diversity doesn't matter either. Yup.

studied law too. Madison was pretty much a career intellectual and college boy. Jefferson was a plantation owner (Farmer? Not quite IMO) but so was the south before the war and industrialization. Hancock was groomed as a businessman and politician.

People might want to remember them as the every-day-men, but it simply isn't true. At least, not in the somewhat limited definition we have today of no-nothing, anti-civic Joe the Plumbers.

now thats not an argument against diversity. But it is one to expect excellence from our leaders.

There was plenty of time to go to the Cedar Grove Cemetery for their annual Memorial Day parade/ceremony and still have time left over to watch the Bruins.

I know the hippies on here are not bruins fans (all pink hat sox fans) but the b's are not playing today - so your calculations are not correct.

I'd like to see a Venn diagram of the humorless and the easily trolled. Might be two concentric circles.

Would you rather vote for the guy [putting effort into his campaign] or the guy who's [not trying]? Because I'm not trying.

"This is 100% about marketing my rag, and I have no serious necessity to be mayor of Boston. And anyone that thinks I was serious, or this wasn't a gimmick, is a chowdah'head."

On another note, I know because of my age I'm supposed to love Bar Stool Sports, but I just don't get it. That kinda of comedy and banter works well in a good group of friends, but coming from some anon dude bros on the other side of the paper just doesn't work for me..
