Half or more of those floats were just pure commercial advertising, nothing having to do with gay pride.

Sound harmless until you consider that the cost of floats has skyrocketed, and a lot of groups can't afford the prices. So now actual small GLBT groups can't afford to have a float.

But hey, glad Tripadvisor can have a huge float that has jack shit to do with GLBT issues...

Fuck you, Boston Pride. You sold out and cashed in on how trendy it is to support GLBT stuff.

It's not excessive intrusion into every aspect of our lives from the government we have to fear, it's excessive intrusion from the marketing executives.

Sadly, we are losing that battle more and more every day. And society in general doesn't seem to care.

I'll save the discussion about how advertising is a huge waste of money and other resources, not to mention how environemtally un-friendly it is, for another time.

This year's pride actually didn't have as many commercial floats as previous years. I'd say half of what I saw was politicians. The other half included school groups, religious groups, athletic groups. The one thing I saw little of were the scantily clad gay male dancers which seem to be the only thing noticed by reporters from the likes of Fox news and the Herald.

" I saw little... scantily clad gay male dancers...the only thing noticed by reporters from the likes of Fox news and the Herald..."

Uhm, you wanna check the lead photo here on Universal Hub, and reconsider your observation?

I did. That's not scantily clad. That's a dancer. Even if a female impersonator, it's not very provocative. I'm referring to the Machine Bar float of g-string wearing go-go boys that conservatives are curiously fixated on.

Yeah, I wish they'd come up with a way to have drastically different prices for, say, Home Depot and a queer dads group. And something other than requiring nonprofit status, because I do think it's really important to include small, unique community groups that wouldn't need to or want to file for nonprofit status.

I also think the corporate presence sends a valuable message though -- people need to hear the message that every business, hospital, place of worship, school, etc. has LGBT staff and customers, and it isn't just queer groups who need to remember we exist. Pride is also an easy barometer for how queer-friendly a business is. If I apply for a job or a school for my kid, I can be like, "so, you don't march in Pride...why not?" and I can easily learn a lot from whether they quote the price and say they considered it but just couldn't swing it, or if they say they chose to donate to GLAD instead, or they ask what Pride is, or they say they never thought about it, or they say their organization doesn't believe in "political" events, or they say their board would never go for that. So I think it's great that we're headed toward a culture where every major hospital, business, etc. marches in Pride or at least has a good reason why not. It makes the phobes easier to spot when HR dude says the business is queer-friendly, but then doesn't know what Pride is and says no one has ever brought it up.

"Everyone is falling over themselves to support the LGBT community."

As a queer friend said last night during the discussion on how much it sucks that Pride has turned into a commerical pander-fest: "No shit. For god sakes, it's hip to be gay these days."

You might want to consider working for a company that treats *everyone* fairly, not just your trendy, privileged, protected, minority subgroup. For example, how do they treat fathers looking for paternity leave? Does management treat clerical staff like doormats? Are they assholes to people with long term medical issues or chronic diseases? Who cares! They love me, teh gayz!

If you interviewed with me, and my company had nothing to do with gender issues or did not provide services specifically targeted towards the GLBT community...and you asked if my company marched in Pride, my instant reaction would be "*WHOOP WHOOP WHOOP* SPECIAL SNOWFLAKE TROUBLEMAKER ALERT" and your resume would be in the trash before your entitled little ass had made it out our door. Same if a Muslim applicant walked in the door and asked if we donated to her local mosque. Uh, no, we don't...nor do we to the Catholic or Baptist churches.

Of course, you'd whine on Teh Facebooks later that you didn't get a job with us because "They're not gay friendly."

Get a grip...

Don't like putting up with working conditions in which we're constantly harassed and treated like second-class citizens. If you think that makes me entitled or makes a workplace trendy for treating all people like people, then you're an as asshole.

Your company does provide services to the LGBT community. And your insensitivity when dealing with us shows.

to do with the fact that a lot of gays are in high income brackets and in my experience like to spend it.
Oh, Evan, if you knew how much you are missed by every chauffeur in town!

Do you mean, like, "some"? 'Cause in my experience most of us who live in town are self-chauffeured by T and Zipcar.

If you only encounter people who can afford to hire you and your car to drive around, of course you meet a lot of rich people. So, when some of those rich people are gay, it doesn't mean their income is any more representative of gay people generally than the other customers represent straight people.

I spent hanging around the Napoleon Club.

Oh, and Swirly, how insightful of you to know that I never met any gay people in my life before I started driving limousine!

"Gee, could it possibly have anything to do with the fact that a lot of gays are in high income brackets and in my experience like to spend it."

That is an absurd stereotype that unfortunately many people believe to be true. I am a gay man now in my 50s and I have never been in a particularly high income bracket, nor have most of my gay friends. Have I failed as a homosexual?

Like any demographic, of course the prominent people who are all over the headlines are going to be the rich people. These are the people whose family lives are broadcast all over the media, so the I-assume-everyone-is-straight folks know that these people are queer. There are of course child care workers and store clerks and landscapers who are queer, but the head-in-the-sand people are assuming they're straight so they don't realize there are working-class queers.

Transgender folks actually have one of the highest unemployment rates and some of the worst rates of job discrimination. And a lot of LGBT people drop out of school.

It's unfortunate that some groups don't have the ability to build large floats but we should be happy to have huge companies in the Boston area that support our community. They support our community by employing vast amounts of LGBT people, supporting their causes and treating them as equals....
So, these companies may not solely be a LGBT group, but they do support us and I am thrilled to see companies like TripAdvisor in the Pride parade. Thank you TripAdvisor.

And to the person who feels slighted by not having a large float....what do you consider Pride? Maybe you need to reevaluate that concept. To me Pride is being happy with who you are and tolerant of all groups, not the size of your float. When you accept that, maybe you will be able to accept ALL others. Isn't that what the Pride parade is about?....acceptance and tolerance?

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but Gabriel Gomez did not march in the parade. His campaign merely had a booth that he dropped by at later in the day.

Well, there's an NHL Czech:

Here's a list of Czech film actors and actresses for you to count if you'd like: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Czech_film_a...

Don't know if they are Hollywood Czechs, however.

Are you sure you don't mean Hollywood Squares?

Gomez is a 'new kind' of Republican. That's the kind who declines to march in the bigest parade of the spring when all 178 candidates for Boston Mayor are marching, as was Ed Markey, and even a ton of pols who don't have to run for -reelection this Nov. like Warren, Joe Kennedy, and Barney Frank. Actions speak louder than words. Gomez voted with his feet.
