Election roundup: Conley goes for the Palm Beach vote; Walsh wants to school johns

The Conley camp has posted this helpful video for people unsure how to fill in an oval:

Marty Walsh yesterday came out against prostitution, says part of his effort to curb commercial sex would focus on customers, by setting up "John Schools" or "a mandatory diversion curriculum for first-time sex buyers."

Waslh would also increase the number of BPD detectives going after online and hotel-based prostitution and would penalize hotels and lodging houses that don't do enough to keep the sex workers out.

The Globe has a tool that lets you compare candidates on their positions.

At a recent forum at Boston Latin School, David Wyatt talked about more than just the fact he's a pro-life Republican.

And Walsh wants to lead cops further down the path of least resistance with more prostitution busts? Boy, I'm glad I'm not voting for him.

...then we wouldn't hear that from Walsh.

"That's where you'll find me, along with lovers, muggers and thieves." Well, Marty, 2 out of 3 ain't bad.

A giant whorehouse in East Boston, perhaps?

Yesssss! I had been on the edge of my seat waiting to see how the candidates came down on the prostitution issue. Finally a candidate is addressing something that really affects me as opposed to taxes, city services and schools. Too long have I been in the general vicinity of hotels that wantonly rent rooms to unescorted adult females that enjoy visitors not their husbands. Marty Walsh will be the bane of every disinterested night clerk in this fair city!

I was in a different classroom with David Wyatt. After his introverted and silent appearances, I was intrigued to get a bit of authenticity. My take is in one of my blogs here.

Points include that he feels his siblings stranded him making end-of-life decisions about his 81-year-old mom. He wouldn't say whether he (pro-lifer) had to make a pull the plug or turn off respirator decision.

He answered my question about how his anti-abortion views would affect a Wyatt administration. He said he knew he couldn't do anything by law or regulation. He'd rely on the bully pulpit to influence folk.

...and would penalize hotels and lodging houses that don't do enough to keep the sex workers out.

Great idea. Require innocent hotel workers to act as cops and then prosecute them as criminals if they don't do a good enough job. Mindless regulations like this scare away people who want to set up shop in the city.

If they want more Jobs, looking at removing burdensome, unrelated regulations will go a lot further than some dream casino.

Thanks. If I wasn't convinced not to vote for Walsh before, I certainly am now.

Prostitution is a problem for neighborhoods when working girls and boys take over street corners and bus stops on the Silver Line and suburban customers and pimps use the bus stops as a place to do business. Anyone who objects to cracking down on prostitution doesn't include residents of the South End, Dorchester or Chinatown.

The the thing to do is decriminalize and legalize prostitution. Cracking down on prostitutes and johns is counter-intuitive, harmful, and based on pointless puritanical ideas.

It's a complicated issue, but the way it's being attacked is very very wrong. Check out swaay.org etc, sex workers deserve rights, and deserve better laws.
