Walsh tells out-of-state moneybag PACs to stop picking on his friend John

Yesterday, the Connolly campaign issued a statement about flyers and tweets that say mean things about their man, the sort of thing that has no place in a Boston campaign:

Representative Walsh said that he would run a positive race. He said that negative campaigning does not have a place in politics and yet the special interests funding his campaign are distributing negative flyers filled with personal attacks," said Connolly. "The voters of Boston deserve a race about our ideas and visions for the future. They do not want personal attacks and misrepresentations."

Among other things, the flyer, which was produced by Working America PAC, attacks Connolly’s personal upbringing and background. This follows shortly after another outside group, American Working Families, which has spent almost $675,000 on behalf of Walsh, was called out by The Boston Globe for sending negative tweets about Connolly.

Not long after, Walsh issued a statement:

I condemn these kinds of personal negative attacks. This mailer, and the attacks on my opponent's family, are out of bounds. John is my friend and there is no place in this campaign for personal attacks like this. To those responsible for this mailing and anyone thinking about doing anything like it, my message is clear: stop, don't do it, don't even think about it. The people of Boston deserve better. I have always run on my record and on the issues facing our families and that is what I will continue to do in this campaign.

The problem for John is if he makes this negative ad an issue the Murphy negative ad will blow up in his face

You gotta find Connolly's outrage on this a touch offensive. His move on Murph in '07 was as low as any candidate can get. This was a 3rd party piece....and if found to be the most negative thing in this race then we are doing well as a city. With that being said, Walsh was right to condemn it.

Did John Connolly cry about the out-of-state moneybag PAC piece like he did Wednesday when he admitted his year in Boston teaching was a personal failure?

"in what Connolly tearfully recalls as a “personal failure” at Boston Renaissance Charter School."

Talked about his anonymous mailings. Johns a punk raised by hacks.

It's wrong for John Connolly to criticize Marty Walsh for the mailer because Walsh has no control over the 3rd party pac. In fact, it's illegal for Walsh to speak with them.

That said, Connolly's complaint comes in a context, a context where John Connolly went negative anonymously in his own campaign for city council, and never apologized explaining, "it isn't illegal." That my friends, it a monster size hypocrisy and more rhetoric, from him and his campaign, that intentionally deceives voters.

Marty took the high road, "the attacks on my opponent's family, are out of bounds. John is my friend and there is no place in this campaign for personal attacks like this."

Have a look for yourself.

Not a fan of either candidate, but when did having successful parents and being successful become a bad thing?

Being a life long political hack is another. How many pensions does his father have.

Do the pensions of the father automatically disqualify the son?

It says John was "educated at elite prep schools." I know he went to Roxbury Latin School, I think he went from grade 8 to 12, and I'm pretty sure he didn't attend any other elite prep school.

I don't worry about the fact John Connolly had an advantage being able to attend Roxbury Latin. You can't blame him for having access. What is important is how he uses it.

There are only 50 students per grade at Roxbury Latin. Presently, tuition is $24,000. That's more than present day UMass tuition, fees, room and board: $23,198.

Wealth, well poverty, is the single most determinative factor in school achievement gap.

John's dad was state treasurer Secretary of the Commonwealth and he ran for US Senate twice and lost twice. His mom was Chief Justice of the Dedham District Court. My guess is that put John's family on the upper end of the salary range in Roslindale/West Roxbury.

John's work at RL helped get him into Harvard, and his work at Harvard helped get him into BC Law which gave him an education in law so he could realize his chosen career -- corporate lawyer. He chose this career after teaching two years in NY as a volunteer and one in Boston Renaissance Charter school. In a recent Globe article, he called the year at Renaissance a "personal failure." He had planned to become a principal but as a result of his experience in the classroom, he chose law. He's worked at three firms in a law career four times as long as his three years in teaching and 12 times as long as his year teaching in Boston.

He campaigns as the education mayor, which some voters find deceptive and misleading, especially when he introduces himself as "a former teacher who taught kids from every neighborhood in Boston."

Attending Roxbury Latin is not an example of privilege that should be held against a person but
where John Connolly's privilege is on full display is defending a negative anonymous attack mailer that he sent out to get elected to city council in Nov 2007, claiming it's not illegal, while criticizing Marty Walsh for something his campaign did not do and has no control over by law -- send out the above mailer. That's privilege, and that's how John Connolly operates, at least in those two fairly comparable situations.

Just this simple act more than demonstrates the character of these 2 men. Connolly is still trying to get traction out of this by sending emails to supporters condemning Walsh when Walsh immediately stood up for him but connolly wont call what he personally did to Murphy w the fake lit wrong at all...

The bigger issue here is that Marty Walsh's campaign completely depends on labor unions, particularly the building trades. They put him in the final. The provide the money and the bodies. Sorry, I do not buy the line "he has no control over outside groups.". I don't believe it when Republicans say it, I do not believe it when the Walsh campaign says it.

Might I ask why Steven Tolman of the Mass. AFL-CIO keeps showing up at Walsh events? It is all wink-wink, nod-nod. They know where to send the people to knock on doors and send the mail.

You don't seem to know the difference between Mass AFL-CIO. an organization from Massachusetts that has been involved in countless elections such as Sen Warren, Congressmen Lynch, and Congressman Capuano, and American Working Families an out of state Super PAC.

I hope John Connolly finally apologizes to Murphy.

John Connolly's father, Michael Connolly, was a state rep. before he served as secretary of state from 1979 to 1994. He chose not to seek re-election. Bill Galvin won the seat and has been there ever since.

Walsh has little control over these things. Labor unions see a chance to have one of their own running a major American city. But it's not gonna happen.

Walsh has incredible support, unfortunately much of it is in the South Shore. A Local 103 member from Marshfield can't vote in Boston. At all his standouts in my neighborhood I see people I know who fled the city years ago. When Connolly has a standout, it's all Boston residents, people who actually live here and are raising children.

Connolly compares people who question his bio to the birther movement, and assumes it is driven by "disgruntled hard-liners in the Boston Teachers Union who oppose his candidacy".

How incredibly arrogant of him to make those incorrect assumptions about anybody who dares question the way he has been misleading voters and compare people -- who he assumes are BPS teachers -- to the crazy racists who can't accept that Obama is president.

What's frightening about this is that he clearly has BPS teachers front and center on his opponents list. I wonder why that would be.

call it "frightening" but what needs to be broken is not teachers but arrogance. Consider this question or example: why shouldn't teachers pay for parking at work? All the rest of us have to - except cops & firefighters. But imagine the firestorm if BPS were to charge parking fees in order to, say, fund extra-curricular programs. We'd probably see a wildcat strike of aggrieved teachers.

"Barack Obama was born in Kenya and raised in Indonesia and Hawaii." -- Miriam Goderich, Obama Literary Agent

I'm no fan of John Connolly but he may be (accidentally) accurate with his analogy of teachers and birthers. After all, the teachers who question Connolly are merely reacting to the biography published as truth by his staff. Birthers too, are merely reacting to Barack Obama's bio, published as truth by his own personal literary agent and friend Miriam Goderich and left unchanged from 1991-2007, just before he announced for President. Crazy racism or just reading comprehension skill and trust that candidates would either tell the truth or correct a factual inaccuracy without waiting 16 years?

Amazing how many of you in this thread attacking Connolly - or repeating the same tired claims - are indeed, posting anonymously!

In terms of the mailer a few years ago, how many of you are Steve Murphy fans? How about some disclosure on your part? It's a "non-event" in the sense that nobody cares about it beyond a few Murphy supporters and some political-watchers to the Southwest of Forest Hills station. Nobody cares about it here in Roxbury where I live, nor anywhere else in the city.

Mind you, Steve Murphy is widely "credited" with raising the signature-gathering requirement from 500 to 1500 for City Council At-large, aka "the Steve Murphy protection rule." (Disclosure on my part: I failed to make the ballot - victim to this rule. And I turned in 1848 sigs.) But don't paint poor Stephen as Mr. Democracy, somehow the victim of nefarious Connolly.

....because Murph is a legit moron it takes away the cowardice scumbaggery of Connolly? You have a personal problem with Murph so you excuse Connolly? Or do you find anonymous attack mailers ok? Is your neighborhood of Roxbury fine with a guy like that becoming mayor? Sad if those answers are all yes.
