Dave Andelman, whiny bully

Patrick Maguire makes the case after reading Andelman's recent whine about bullies on Yelp:

Dave Andelman whining about bullying is the ultimate irony. He’s calling for Yelp to be shut down for bullying when he has a history of bullying and suspect business practices. Dave Andelman is a manipulative fraud: his TV show, token efforts as a “lobbyist,” and personal conduct all betray a contempt for his viewers and the restaurant industry from which he derives his livelihood.

Which one is Dave again?

Is he the Michael, Gob or Buster of the Andelmans? Or is it none of the above since I can actually sit down and watch the Bluths without wanting to poke my eyes out.

Dave -- the CEO: wiry, tangerine colored, very waxy on top.

Dan -- the face of the franchise: shorter, stouter, more genial. The least dickish of the bunch.

Mike -- the salesman: shorter yet, the dim runt of the litter. Bobbles his head frequently. Still mad about girls that dissed him in high school.

So let me get this straight.

Dave = Gob, Dan = Michael and Mike = Buster.

Got it. Thank you.

So translated to food would it be:

Dave = Spam (old and gross)
Dan = Porkroll (tasty, but in family of gross food)
Mike = Scrapple (see spam, but less people know how gross it is)

I stopped watching PG after the umpteenth feature on obvious RABA member Fuddrucker's. I wish I had some good limo stories to tell about these three idiots, but I actually get paid to drive people around, not doing trades with these handout seeking morons. Dan is probably the most likeable of the three, Dave is a smarmy little shit who talks tough, but put him in a corner and he'll cry like a baby. Mike is nothing more than the Curly Joe DaRita of the three, an amazingly stupid human being who they apparently don't even put on the show anymore.

Together, these three make a nice living using their TV show to hustle restaurants into joining their "alliance" which basically translates into free meals for these professional freeloaders. And please, don't let me get started on those rip-offs they call "food festivals".

Was it bullying when Dan apparently called the hostess a "little monkey"?

The father , Sir Eddie of Andelman , had shtick , and was entertaining. he never met a hot dog , or a Chinese food plate he didn't like. The apples of the tree have been a lucky bunch . Their show is obviously a set up job , but its entertainment. Just don't take it seriously when you are going to part with your presidents , that's all . Maybe there should be a show that reviews their reviews .

"Maybe there should be a show that reviews their reviews ."

Yes, please! Or a blog, whatever. Sounds pretty great. If I only had the money and time (and metabolism).

Can't they both lose? Yelp is no paragon of virtue either:

One of the key points of Maguire's piece is the irony of Andelman calling out Yelp for profiting from phony positive reviews of restaurants. I don't really see anyone defending Yelp, but as I noted in the Herald comments section on that op-ed (and am quoted in the Server Not Servant piece):

"Dave Andelman is absolutely correct: it is wrong (bordering on criminal) for a business to profit from the propagation of bogus opinions of restaurants by phony critics who have a financial interest in the places they are praising. But as this kind of pay-for-play whoring is the exact business model that Andelman has made a tidy living from with his Phantom Gourmet empire, he’s the most hilariously awful advocate for this argument imaginable. It’s like watching one streetwalker beating up on another sorry chickenhead working girl for trying to work her corner. The Phantom needs to take off his own kneepads first before he slags another business for profiting from opinion prostitution."

He hasn't stopped has he?.. he went on Facebook several weeks ago and said the same thing very publicly.

They really aren't helping their business by doing this.. very bad PR very bad.

Their days are numbered, most have figured out his show is a scam and its nothing more than an infomercial for restaurants who pay the PG for advertising or are apart of their club. I wish 'BZ would pull the plug on this so called "show".

Do we know if it's truly a 'show' or are they paying for airtime and pretending it's a station program? I assumed they paid for their airtime in order to have the distribution for their 'reviews' and therefore justify the advertiser shake-down.

The part where one of them talked about how he wants to physically assault homeless men who appear able-bodied was telling. Born into money, but thinks he's a self-made man.

Ah, yes, Phantom Gourmet where only three food items - Nachos, Pizza and Burgers - are regularly reviewed.

Dave "still single after all these years" Andelman is so very lucky that he and his brothers, Dumb and Dim,
had Dad's coat tails to ride into that glorious processed and junk food marketing empire sunset. I mean Dave could of been a
frustrated ex boxer, turned corporate lawyer, bullying his support staff to no end, making passes at the
receptionist and then insulting her when she is rejects him apparently not impressed by the size of his meat package.

Patrick Maquire rocks and he is "right on' in his blog post. Personally, I would like to see these guys
just ooze away like racid butter.

And please, please reject the urge to compare them with The Three Stooges. At least those guys had class...and talent!

I actually like the concept of a locally produced TV program like the Phantom Gourmet.
But the more knowledge I gain of the Andelman Brothers, the less I like them.
Until I saw Adam's post today, I wasn't aware that others questioned their tactics as well.

For me it began with incidents on the former Talk 96.9.

* First there was a rather lengthy conversation on their food program about a woman's "whale tail".
Sorry, as a gay man I'm not always up on straight men's lingo. But even the straight male friends I have don't use this expression.
I was tuning in to hear about restaurants, not the appearance of a female restaurant employee.

* Later I was surprised to hear the Andelman brothers appear on the Jay Severin show. Severin was infamous for his volatile opinions and obnoxious comments about minorities, and sexist comments about women. I was not impressed that this is the company they keep. Then I got to hear Dave's diatribe about Obama, and it was pretty much over for me.

I went to the Phantom Gourmet's Beach B-B-Q party at City Hall Plaza this past summer. If the entry tickets hadn't been given to me, I would have been upset. The food wasn't bad, but overpriced. Most of the people there looked like tourists in from out of town who were clueless about what they were walking into. To me, the clincher was the music. Lame Beach Boys style cover band. I would have been impressed with a local rock or soul band, allowing the event to have some local flavor versus pandering to aging baby-boomers from the burbs who listen to nothing but WROR.
